HBO film takes on electronic voting just days before election

Larisa Alexandrovna
Published: Thursday November 2, 2006

A documentary set to air tonight will raise serious questions about the reliability of electronic voting just days before the US midterm elections. A copy of the film has been obtained by RAW STORY.

Hacking Democracy, scheduled to run on cable network HBO starting this evening, consists largely of a collection of videos taken by advocacy groups, interviews with experts, and documentation that suggests something could go very wrong on election night.

At the center of the film is advocacy group Black Box Voting, headed by voter activist Bev Harris, along and other Seattle natives. Among them was the late Andy Stephenson, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2005. At the time of his work with Harris, Stephenson had just failed in his bid to win the Washington State post of Secretary of State.

While the advance buzz about the documentary has focused almost entirely on Diebold, a leading vendors of voting machines, the film explores a wider range of issues, suggesting that something far more insidious than technology is at play, and could threaten our democratic process.

1. The ladies on "The View" were discussing this today.
They each were given advance copies apparently and were all shocked by this film. As one of them said, "They knew about this years ago and they wait until days before the election before they show us this?" Well, we all knew about years ago, but no one would listen to us!

3. i can't stop crying from watching Andy...
this really shook me up when he speaks of his legacy, before he knows that is dying. my heart is broken all over again. it is horrible to know that thee was a moment in time when that vibrant face was glowing somewhere in the world.

8. Please don't get me crying already. Tonight is going to be hard enough for
so many of us here. We've been pounding on this a couple of months BEFORE the 2002 election, and once Gbnc became fully engaged he became a beacon for the rest of us.

14. You know I'll K&R this -- appropriate that you'd run it given all your great
work on ELECTION FRAUD, one of the few journalists unafraid to use the ELECTION FRAUD word.

After all, the stupid machines are only the vehicle of the people progamming them - the real
election thieves.

16. Sorry about that.
Someone needs to get you a copy of the program. About half the people I've called tonight said they didn't have it either.

17. OK, someone volunteer to get me a copy! LOL.
I'm on dial-up, so even if it ends up online somehow, I won't be able to see it.

But I can imagine that Andy is smiling down on all of us tonight.
I knew he wouldn't give up the fight, no matter where he was! :)

18. I don't know about "failing" in his campaign
If you run for the office on an issue, and your opponent starts agreeing with you on that issue, that is a victory of sorts.

he WITHDREW his bid so he could work with Bev Harris on the black box voting problem! Am I not correct in my memory of this, DUers?

20. i know, but because he knew the odds were stacked against him
and i did not use the word fail in my draft, editors changed it during final copy. in any case, Andy was a good friend of mine, so it should be obvious that i would never mean to insult him.

24. what is sloppy?
they changed loads in it, it was longer, and whole sections are missing. even the title is changed. is it sloppy of them? i don't think so. it is common for editors to do that.
