Soldier says he deserted after shooting

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A U.S. soldier who fled to Canada while on leave from Iraq said that he decided to leave the service after witnessing a shooting.

Kyle Snyder said at a news conference organized by peace activists in Louisville before surrendering at Fort Knox, Ky., that he witnessed a fellow soldier shoot an Iraqi civilian, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported Thursday.

Snyder said the soldier was never disciplined.

"If that's the way that the commanding officers in my unit were looking at these types of situations ... that's the wrong answer, that's not professional at all, and it's surely not the reason I had joined," Snyder said.
