Preview 2008 Senate contests |
|
We may or may not win control of the Senate on Tuesday, but we almost certainly will make gains--probably a minimum of four seats and as many (if all our stars allign correctly) as 8.
Looking ahead here are the Senators up for re-election in 2008: Allard--Colorado Biden--Delaware Collins--Maine Cochran--Mississippi Dole--North Carolina Domencici--New Mexico Hagel--Nebraska Inholfe--Oklahoma Kerry--Massachuetts Lautenberg--New Jersey Levin--Michigan Roberts--Kansas Rockefeller--WVA Stevens--Alaska Warner--Virginia Durbin--Illinois Harkin--Iowa Johnson--South Dakota Landreau--Louisiana Pryor--Arkansas Alexander--TN Chambles--GA Coleman--MN Cornyn--TX Graham--SC McConnell--KY Sessions--Alabama Smith--Oregon Sununu--NH
There is speculation that John Kerry, if he runs for president in '08, will not run again. It has also been rumored that Biden, Lautenberg, Stevens and Warner will retire. I hope more Republicans retire than Democrats.
My top GOP targets in '08 Senate: Norm Coleman of Minnesota--a resurgent Dem party in MN. Mitch MCConnell--the Kentucky GOP is in disaray just as the Ohio GOP is this year. Allard--Dems are coming on strong in Colorado, I'd like to see it continue.
If Warner retires in VA, former Gov. Mark Warner, who dropped out of the Democratic race for president this year would be almost a cinch to win in 2008.

She's too liberal for the Repubs and too conservative for the Democrats. No one can stand her. I think her family influence has run its course. I am just worried 'cause Lousiana is getting very red. We elected Vitter two years ago.

I hope Kerry runs for the Senate instead of for POTUS.
