The AutoMark machine in use in Lamar County uses a paper ballot, the same optical scan ballot in use by voters who mark ballots by hand. Voters can check ballots for accuracy before placing them in a ballot box.
“This machine is nothing more than a glorified pencil,” Marlowe said of the AutoMark electronic voting machine designed to assist the disabled.
Voters using the machine insert a paper ballot. Using prompts given by the computer the voter marks the ballot on a touch screen. A braille keypad is in place for the blind along with earphones so that the user can follow instructions given by the machine.
Voters who use the AutoMark machine place their ballots in the same electronic counter as those who mark ballots by hand.
