NYT: Kerry Urges Alito Filibuster, but His Reception Is Cool
<Note the language>

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Published: January 27, 2006

WASHINGTON, Jan 26 — Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts could not attend the Senate debate on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. on Thursday. He was in Davos, Switzerland, hobnobbing with international business and political leaders at the World Economic Forum.

But late Thursday afternoon, Mr. Kerry began calling fellow Democratic senators in a quixotic, last-minute effort for a filibuster to stop the nomination.

Democrats cringed and Republicans jeered at the awkwardness of his gesture, which almost no one in the Senate expects to succeed.

"God bless John Kerry," said Don Stewart, a spokesman for Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican on the Judiciary Committee. "He just cinched this whole nomination. With Senator Kerry, it is Christmas every day."

2. Another example of bias from the New York Times!
Their editorial supports a filibuster, yet their reporters sabotage it.

35. He's just laughing at the guy.
For those who think Kerry has nothing to lose, this is what happens when someone stands up to lead. They get this shit thrown at them.

Oh, I'm so pissed.

8. One thing I have to ask.
I am glad Kerry is pushing the filibuster, but what the hell is he doing in Switzerland at a time like this.....?

12. My point is
it would show alot more unity and strength if he was standing in Washington with other senators calling for a filibuster.

17. If he is the only one, then why are we worried about it.
and maybe he wouldn't be the only one if he was in Washington debating an important issue like Alito on the Supreme Court.

18. Jesus, isn't it past your bedtime?
What's your problem? Should he NOT have called for a filibuster from Boston, Switzerland, Mars, or filibusterphilland?

Stop the riddles and make your point.

What is your point?

20. My point is
we have all or almost all senators in Washington on the floor and the only one coming out publicly wanting a filibuster didn;t stay in Washington to drive it home. He is hobnobbing in Switzerland.

I just wish he was standing next to other senators calling for a filibuster, thats all.

You pretty hostile tonight!

33. The Davos meeting was likely a long term committment
There are only 100 Senators - many are not even remotely likely. I'm sure that he and Kennedy can reach all of them. He also is not the only Senator in Davos, there's a bipartisan delegation. There is also a bipartisan delegation that went to Israel to oversee the elections (including Biden). When there are no votes scheduled, very few people are in the Senate. Many were there on Wednesday when they had the caucus lunches - which Kerry was at.

30. It's only him and Kennedy
They spoke to the causus on Wednesday and they and their staffers are making calls. So, only Kennedy has any room to complain - and he's not complaining.

they did that?

Too partisan even for them? Someone went behind Mr. Kirkpatrick and edited him?

Weird.

39. Why would any man marry a woman he has described at various times
as kind, nurturing, brilliant, beautiful, sexy, and having the strongest moral compass of anyone he ever met. During the campaign there were events (on CSPAN) where you could see his face light up when she arrived from other events.

10. Sad reflection on the state of the Party -- Scandal priority over S Court

Bush corruption and wiretapping won't be matter if he has the Supremes in his back pocket!!

"But other senators at the meeting said an unsuccessful filibuster would leave the party weakened for future battles, the people present said.

Some said a messy and unsuccessful filibuster fight would distract from the Democratic focus on other issues like corruption in government and wiretapping by the Bush administration. "

34. How has this person's reporting been up to this point?
Are his reports always so biased?

He doesn't sound like he's reporting. He sounds like he's writing an opinion piece. Is that his gig? Or was this supposed to be an actual news story?

I've seen the name, but not paid enough attention to him to see if this reflects his normal bias.

Somone at DailyKos quoted the same article, with hobnobbing in there instead of mingling. They must have realized how partisan and negative that sounded, and changed it.

Oh, now I'm REALLY pissed. Bastards.

take an honest stand and make his opposition to Alito known. He deserves repect not scorn for expressing his reservations about this nominee and trying to protect this country.
