The neocon and theocon movements are trying to usurp our Constitutional protections by extending executive power while limiting the power of the Congress and the people. Judge Alito will no doubt join this cause and, with his allies already on the Supreme Court, will usher in a new era of presidential powers.

When do we draw the line? When do we finally say, "No!" to the erosion of Congressional authority and the liberty of the citizens? Consider this excerpt from the book "They Thought They Were Free"

Think about the country we live in today and then think about the country we had even 10 years ago. Is it really the same? Can you notice all the little things that have happened, the little changes that have occurred, that have dramatically changed us as a people and a nation? Do you want to see this cycle continue? Can you forsee where this will end? Consider another excerpt from the same book:

"Once the war began," my colleague continued, "resistance, protest, criticism, complaint, all carried with them a multiplied likelihood of the greatest punishment. Mere lack of enthusiasm, or failure to show it in public, was 'defeatism.' Once the war began, the government could do anything 'necessary' to win it."

Domestic spying. The extreme provisions of the Patriot Act. Suspension of habeas corpus. The invasion of a sovereign nation. Where does it end? Where will you make a stand? If a stand is not made now, there may not be a chance to make one later. History has shown us this.

Please oppose and filibuster against the confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. His record has shown him to favor the corporation and government at the expense of the Constitutional rights of the individual citizen. The Supreme Court is also no place for one who espouses the "unitary executive theory" which would make the President a king or dictator. It is especially no place for Alito, who helped to pervert the "signing statement" into the abomination recently used by President Bush to reserve the power to waive restrictions on torture.

In this day of increasing abuse of executive power, as we have seen with illegal domestic spying, we need to restore our government's checks and balances, not further erode them. For quite some time, we have been traveling down the road to Fascism. If Justice O'Connor is replaced by Alito, there may be no turning back.

This is not politics as usual. It is imperative that you support a filibuster to stop this confirmation, no matter what you feel you may be "giving up" in the future by filibustering now. If Alito is confirmed, will we even have Constitutional rights worth fighting for in the future?

I read recently that, instead of filibustering, Democrats should focus on the elections in 2006 and 2008 so that we can have a Democratic majority to avoid "future Alitos." What struck me as odd is the notion that we even need to worry about future Alitos.

If Samuel Alito is appointed to the Supreme Court, that's it. Game over. The right wing will have complete control of all our branches of government. They're not going to sit around and wait until after the elections. Heck, they've already shown they care nothing for the Constitution, the will of the people, or real democracy. They're going to take their "mandate" and immediately destroy what little is left of America as we know it.

You aren't going to get any more chances Dems. It's the end of the line and we, THE PEOPLE, need you to step up. This madness has to stop. And if you aren't willing to take a risk and slow this right-wing takeover of our beautiful nation, then you are just as guilty as they are.

A lot of things in Judge Alito's record concern me:

* he doesn't seem all that worried about conflicts of interest. When presented with a case against Vanguard Group, a corporation in which he held about half a million dollars in stock, he heard the case and found in favor of Vanguard. In a different reality, Samuel Alito would be facing disbarment proceedings, not confirmation to the Supreme Court.

* he was a member of Concerned Alumni of Princeton, a group whose purpose was to keep minorities and women out of that university. People change. Has Samuel Alito?

* the "unitary executive" concept he expouses should be as troubling to you as it is to me. Samuel Alito believes the executive should be more powerful than the legislative or the judicial, able to act without being checked by either body. The founding fathers believed the three branches should be equally powerful. I believe that if a man believes the Supreme Court shouldn't have the power to stop the abuses of the President, especially considering who the president is at this time, that man shouldn't be on the Supreme Court.

Please filibuster Samuel Alito. The nation will thank you.
