3. The Senate should be done away with.
All it is, is a body of ELITISTS drunk on power.

:argh:

Let the House confirm. That's how it is in the rest of the free world.

4. I think it was Mike Malloy who said
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 01:43 AM by Nutmegger
that the Senate is a sick, mini politburo. I'm paraphrasing of course but he definatly compared it to a politburo.

12. Be careful what you wish for
With Bush's grab for power, that may be the end result.

5. Well we have tried- just remember this when Alito begins to
erode our rights and give more to Bush and the corporations.

7. i can't keep up with the math, but our margin is so small
How many more defections can we take before we can't even hold a freaking filibuster????

Un-be-lieve-a-ble.

Seriously, this sucks.

16. We don't have any margin
Landrieu, Nelson, Akaka and Salazar have all gone on record, whether they oppose or support Alito, as being for a cloture vote. Byrd and Johnson have gone on record as supporting Alito, although they haven't said they'll vote for cloture. It can reasonably be assumed that they won't support a filibuster if they're voting for him. None of the repubs will break rank re cloture, though Chafee and Snowe may very well vote against Alito. Anyone who can add, can see the votes for a filibuster aren't there.

10. in a very blue state.
I'll be shocked if we get more than 25 true Dems voting for cloture. Really depressing.

11. I think you mean against cloture
Hawaii is blue but they do have a Rebug Gov. I think she'll run for Senate too once Inoye retires. Behind Byrd those two are up there in age. Heck Inoye served in WWII, he's Bob Dole's age.

13. Akaka's voting record v Case
according to progressive punch, Akaka has a 91% progressive voting record, compared to 73% for Case and 89% for Inouye.

BTW the shit reference thing is not funny. Aloha.

18. So he gets a medal for "liberalism"
and we get the end of many rights and enumerations in the constitution, a "unitary executive", and a society that is controlled by corporations by law.

14. Contact Akaka and tell him what you think

I'm going to send money to his political opponent. If no (D) runs against him, I'll back his (R) rival.

http://akaka.senate.gov/offices-b.html

I'm writing him a letter now to express my sentiments. DU members should all do the same. Put your campaign donations to work.

17. Akaka is a useless Democrat.
Our only hope is the Senators who don't support a filibuster, abstain from voting for cloture. That's our only hope.:(

21. Checkmate
Byrd, Johnson, and Ben Nelson supporting confirmation. Landrieu and Akaka opposing a filibuster. You can't filibuster with only 40 Senators.
