NY Times runs photo of U.S. soldier shot by sniper on frontpage, above the fold

NOTE: The soldier, thankfully, survived. This photo on the NYT frontpage was being discussed on MSNBC this morning, along with the Army Times editorial calling for Rumsfeld's replacement and the Vanity Fair neocon article, as among attempts from many directions to influence Tuesday's election.

9. The multi-media link is a must watch
I can't believe how they captured the whole event as it unfolded. It is pretty shocking. I can't figure out why a helicopter didn't come for him. They evacuated him with a humvee? That does not seem right.

39. Riveting - thanks.
Regarding humvee evac, I dunno for sure, but I can imagine in that circumstance it makes sense to conduct a coordinated, two stage transport: armored humvee egress from the hot zone with similtaneous dispatch of medivac helo, subsequently both rendezvous at a clear LZ to transfer patient.

32. I'm glad he survived. Our troops are doing one hell of a Houdini
staying alive out there inspite of the incompetence that has put them and kept them in Iraq. We should seriously respond to W by saying that our intentions are to first and foremost fire Rumsfield.

I could even make an exception in my mind if we were truly at war with a real threat.

This is just sad and pathetic.

8. You mean there is a war happening? War causes casualties?
Sorry if my sarcasm offends anyone - I am sincerely sorry for the soldier, the troops around him, his friends and family who are now worried for him.

I am sickened that the true cost of the war has not been appearing in photos above the fold in every newspaper across the US day after day after day...

I just barely remember the nightly news from Vietnam - nightly reminders of the horror.

:-(

21. The stateside 'news' during Viet Nam didn't tell half the story.
I still remember how disgusted I was at the news after 'coming home' from Nam. Every photo still tries to make it look like Mount Suribachi - some movie heroic. It's not. It's dirty, demeaning, horrific, and disgusting.

15. It angers me that the media has been an accomplice in the Bush lies
They are helping him hide the truth from the American people. The term "war" is theoretical. Americans need to see and hear what "war" means.

20. I wonder how many NYT readers will be outraged..
...at the NYT for running the picture or the * administration for turning a blind eye and deaf ear to the suffering war causes.

Thank goodness the soldier survived. I hope his wounds are not too serious. And it appears his fellow solider is grieving.

I think you need to be registered at the NYT, but it is worth viewing. You can find it on this page under multimedia.
