That Hussein will be convicted is a foregone conclusion. So if it's announced tomorrow that he's guilty, and sentenced to death, how will this affect our election on Tuesday?

It goes without saying that Bush will make a speech telling us how this despicable character has been brought to justice. (As an aside, I can't wait until our despicable pResident is brought to justice.) But does anyone believe this will change Tuesday's outcome?

We know that Fox News and other media whores will play it to the fullest, but as little regard I have for the intelligence of the American public, I can't see this having any significant impact on Tuesday.

Does anyone see anything I'm not seeing in this planned distraction?

18. Okay, you win.
But seriously, wouldn't bin Laden's vote have canceled out his vote anyway?

11. Today's the 4th, tomorrow's the 5th. Other than that, no difference
But either way the verdict will stir them up more than usual.

It won't be pretty.

27. I agree with you 100%.
If Saddam gets the death sentence, there will be extreme Sunni Arab vs. Shia Arab violence.

My roommate is Turkish, and she says that the vengeance of the Sunnis will be great. She says that they'll forget the Sunnis who Saddam killed, raped and tortured, and will focus on the Shia.

The only question is whether the violence will break out in time for it to be all over the news.

My guess is that the curfew will not be lifted until Wednesday.

7. People let stupid things influence their vote.
I think the Saddam guilty verdict will be greated the same way $2.00 gas was: voters will be suspicious of the timing.

8. Not to start trouble but...
there is a statement in your post which I find disturbing. "but as little regard I have for the intelligence of the American public..." Are you not an American? Are you some type of mensa type? What do you base your statement on? Us Joe sixpacks want to know.
But I also agree with you on one thing. This probably won't make an iota of difference. Everyone knows that Hussein will be found guilty and be sentenced to death. Anything else will be a surprise.

14. My statement stands as is. Actually I've taken it from a quote by
Edited on Sat Nov-04-06 03:03 PM by Cyrano
H.L. Mencken, an early 20th century journalist. "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

This is something I've come to believe is true. A vote for Bush is not a good example of this as many (if not most of here) believe that both his elections were stolen.

However, Ronald Reagan's elections were not stolen (as far as we know) yet the majority of people voted for this amiable imbecile -- twice.

Please don't mistake my belief to include those who post on DU. Virtually all DUers are far better informed than the public at large.

On the other hand, if you disagree with my viewpoint, then how come negative advertising has proven to be so successful?

(Edited for spelling.)

17. Face it, in general we are as dumb as a stump.
Look how we've governed ourselves for the last 25 years. We are fat rich and stupid, squandering the planet's resources we inherited from our wiser parents and getting conned by the worst gang of crooks the planet has seen in a long time. History will look at american society from 1980-2020 as perhaps the most delusional idiotic bunch of people ever. Trust me, I know stupid.

15. Maybe a major terror threat
in the U.S. due to outraged supporters of Saddam H.? A code red alert and martial law? Or, simply using fear to keep voters away from the polls?

Or not. At any rate, this administration has proven to be so malevolent, and my level of distrust in them is so profound, that my imagination tends to get out of control at times. Now my greatest source of hope is in the fact that their malevolence is only matched by their incompetence.

16. "IF"...? There ain't no "IF." The verdict HAS to be guilty.
Can you imagine the outroar if Saddam was aquitted? Bush would have to arrest the entire jury and torture them into changing their votes -- which he would happily do if it proved necessary.

Never before in history has a defendant's conviction been more of a sure thing. Saddam MUST be found guilty -- no matter whether he really IS or not. Bush cannot permit any other outcome.

20. Nah. Even judge Ito couldn't help. The verdict was foreordained before
Hussein even stepped into the court room. What do you think the Iraqis will think of democracy after this kangaroo court closes up shop.

That's not to say Hussein isn't guilty of torture and mass murder. From what's known about this thug, why would anyone have to "rig" the jury?
