Who's to blame for Pastor Haggard's fall from grace? His fat, lazy wife
Edited on Sat Nov-04-06 09:22 PM by RamboLiberal
Colorado Springs' New Life Church just announced that it has fired Pastor Ted Haggard for his "sexually immoral conduct." The much publicized meth and gay hooker scandal has elicited a little bit of soul searching and a lot hemming and hawing from Haggard's fellow Evangelical leaders, but perhaps the most ridiculous response came yesterday from Pastor Mark Driscoll of Seattle's Mars Hills mega-church-wannabe.

Writing in his personal blog, Driscoll offers his fellow pastors "some practical suggestions" on how to avoid the type of temptation that consumed Pastor Haggard. And near the top of his list?

"Most pastors I know do not have satisfying, free, sexual conversations and liberties with their wives. At the risk of being even more widely despised than I currently am, I will lean over the plate and take one for the team on this. It is not uncommon to meet pastors' wives who really let themselves go; they sometimes feel that because their husband is a pastor, he is therefore trapped into fidelity, which gives them cause for laziness. A wife who lets herself go and is not sexually available to her husband in the ways that the Song of Songs is so frank about is not responsible for her husband's sin, but she may not be helping him either."

Uh-huh. Leave it to a fundamentalist Evangelical preacher to have such a profound understanding of human sexuality. Or as the inimitable sex columnist Dan Savage so aptly put it:

"I'm sure Ted Haggard is saying something along these lines to his wife right now: 'Oh, honey... I wouldn't have been having those meth-fueled ass-banging sessions with that gay hooker if you hadn't have let yourself go like that!' "

Catholic political railing is most centered on abortion.

It's hard to say about Opus Dei, but the current bossman (who is
quite firmly behind work to reverse gay marriage) is a Capuchin.

Granted I haven't been back for 10 years, but they don't change all that much and I get the skinny from my mom who still attends.

Then again they have been locksteping evangelicals in the morals despite the fact that the evangelicals don't even consider Catholics to be Christians.

His wife was complicit in his leadership of the church and no doubt shared his fundy worldview. Hopefully this event will crush her will and eliminate her capacity to further aid the conservative cause. Showing sympathy to her kind bespeaks a grave weakness of character.

I do feel sorry for her as I would feel sorry for anyone whose spouse/partner is found to be cheating. In this case, I hope that he didn't bring home any diseases to her.

Have you ever been betrayed by a loved one? By the person who is putting the roof over the your head and the food on the table. These women are taught very early in life that they are to do as they are told.

I guess you feel that showing sympathy isn't a macho characteristic...well, machoism is highly over-rated. It leads to war, violence, and oppression. The ability to sympathize or empathize is something that macho boys should consider. The world would be a far better place.

Go bespeak yourself, ice boy.

129. Macho?
Machismo is a psychological crutch for the immature, a way for the weak-minded to puff themselves up in public. What I advocate is pragmatism. Democrats have practiced "polite politics" for far too long, and Joe Lieberman has shown where that road leads.

"These women are taught very early in life that they are to do as they are told."

And that is precisely why they deserve no sympathy or forgiveness. "True believers" are an abomination, a scourge on any pluralistic society. People who base the totality of their world view on one book or one story or one radio host must be driven into every kind of desert, not offered succor, for they will surely give none. Fundamentalists and neocons will take ten miles for every inch given. That is their nature, and extending the hand of friendship to them is like beckoning vipers into your home.

Why don't you open your church of pragmatism?

What kind of a person assumes that banging a male prostitute is a substitute for not having sex with your wife?
Sounds like an argument from someone who understands and empathizes with the desire to have sex with a man.

This is some VERY revealing rhetoric, indeed.

(So, is his wife's extra 15 pounds also to blame for his drug addiction?)

Sorry, Mr. Driscoll. What his wife had, Haggy didn't want. This has nothing to do with her
"letting herself go". Please.

These people are absurd.

She looks like she's trying to maintain some personal dignity in public while that jerk she's married to struts and yammers for the cameras.

She's the good wifey who bore her husband 5 kids, and some other wingnut pastor tries to blame HER for her husband's sins? Spare me. That addition to the saga just tells me the hypocrisy among the male leaders in that movement is near-total.

It's not their religious persuasion -- it's the hypocrisy. It's not Haggard's male prostitute -- it's the vicious hypocrisy.

Gayle Haggard on Embracing Life as a Pastor's Wife
Kelly O'Neil
Contributing Writer

As the wife of a man involved in ministry, you sometimes may feel trapped by unrealistic expectations and overburdened by obligations. The constant demands on his time and yours–as well as the feeling that your life is always on display–can lead to discouragement and frustration.

But ministry life isn’t about enduring challenges, says author Gayle Haggard. It’s about embracing joy. After more than 20 years of working alongside husband Ted Haggard, she believes that women supporting their husbands in ministry truly can be free, happy and fulfilled as they recognize the value of their unique vocation.

religious whackos think it is that all that's standing between an upright pastor and servicing a male prostitute is the pastor'swife letting herself go a bit?

Here's a clue for them: Men who are sexually attracted to woman do not generally go for other men.

It must be awful to be married to a man who is not interested in you and you think you have to put on the charade because of his "position" and maybe, the children. It's all about him, isn't it? Shame, shame on the wife for not being alluring enough to keep her husband from plugging another man in the rear-end. Shame, shame on her. As Bettamillion Bill Bennett would ask..."where's the outrage??"

37. And we used to think that the reason Catholic priests were gay
was because they weren't allowed to have wives. Maybe St. Paul was on to something with this priestly celibacy thing. At least it saved some poor woman from a life of silent suffering.

Now maybe it's time to acknowledge in religion and spiritual practices that a person's sexuality has little to do with his need for spirituality.

64. Part of this reminds me of what Rev Jim Casy told me....
Edited on Sat Nov-04-06 09:49 PM by Tom Joad
From the Huffington Post article:
But mostly what I've learned from Pastor Driscoll's sage advice is that becoming a pastor is a great way to meet women. (And men, I guess.) Apparently, the ladies think pastors are hot:

"I have, however, seen some very overt opportunities for sin. On one occasion I actually had a young woman put a note into my shirt pocket while I was serving communion with my wife, asking me to have dinner, a massage, and sex with her. On another occasion a young woman emailed me a photo of herself topless and wanted to know if I liked her body. Thankfully, that email was intercepted by an assistant and never got to me."

Now this is what Jim Casy told me(you may have read this in my story, The Grapes of Wrath)
Jim told me: That often after one of those big revival meetings...
"I used to get people jumpin' and talkin in tounges, an glory-shoutin till they just fell down an passed out. An some i'd bqaptize to bring 'em to. and then- you know what i'd do? I'd take one of them girls out in the grass, a I'd lay with her. Done it every time. Come the next time, them and me full of the spirit, I'd do it again. I figgered there just wasn't no hope for me, and i was a damned ol' hypocrite. But i didn't mean to be."

He came to this conclusion:
"maybe it aint a sin. maybe it's just the way folks is. maybe we been whippin the hell out of ourselves for nothin'

I feel more than a little sorry for Haggard, that he couldn't find it in himself to accept who he was, and so many in our culture who would accept who he was.

79. Driscoll's Mars Church is a near cult....and he is a misogynist.
I have been following this church ever since one of my best friends' son was a member. The son rose through the ranks and was nearly a 'Deacon' when he asked the wrong question. Even though he and his wife had been long time members and were dutifully having lots of children, they were 'shunned' by the congregation on Driscoll's orders.

There have been many interesting articles about this church. Here are a few.

http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=32140 (This article is the best).

http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2006/09/13/righteous/index_np.html

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/238406_marshill29.html

I've heard that Driscoll's wife appears to be very depressed. Many women in this congregation are attracted to the church because of the free-thinking 'rock and roll' sermons, but seem to become brainwashed and give up their careers to stay home, have babies and home school. Think Andrea Yates.

Driscoll has stated his goal is for the congregation to have so many children that they shift the political 'tilt' of Seattle away from it's liberal tendencies.

I would not be at all surprised to hear that Driscoll and Haggart have been 'close'.

83. I have known many pastor's wives. He's a lying idiot.
First of all, I have never, not once, known a pastor's wife who has "let herself go." Not one. Every one I've known, including the Christian Ed majors who ended up becoming pastor's wives, has been meticulous in her appearance, almost too much, if you ask me.

"Trapped into fidelty"? Excuse me, but he's apparently forgetting all those women who throw themselves at the pastors everyday. Not a pastor's wife I've known has ever forgotten that and keeps a close eye on the women in the church and her husband. There's temptation every day, and the wives have to keep an eye out for it. I know one pastor who refuses to meet with a woman if there's no one else in the office, and I think that's the smartest way to go. How many pastors have run off with the choir director or someone else's wife or the church secretary? Sheesh, he's an idiot.

Pastors often go on retreats together, but he's such a damn misogynist that he hasn't talked with the wives at all, it sounds like. Oh, and it was common knowledge at our college that the religion majors were the biggest pervs and horniest guys. More than one had a quick wedding over the summer, only to have his wife give birth six months later or less. They weren't the biggest partiers (that was the baseball team), but they were constantly on the prowl for their next sexual partner.

86. Gayle Haggard
certainly does not look like a woman who has "let herself go". More likely, the mistake she made was marrying a self-hating gay homophobe. I don't know about her attitude and sex drive, but somehow I don't think she is the problem in their relationship.

On that note, I do believe everyone needs to have free and open conversations about these types of things. Not doing so leads to irrational and stupid behavior followed by the inevitable humiliation and heart break. Too many of my buddies worship their wives at the office but won't hardly even talk to her when they get home. And they'll have 101 excuses for it.

88. New Rule: if wives "owe" it to their husbands to stay hot...
... then husbands owe it to their wives to get rich. Finances are just as much a part of marriage as sex is. And if it's reasonable for a man to marry a woman believing that she'll stay teen-cute and tight-bodied (even after twenty years and five kids), then it's also reasonable for a woman to marry a man believing that he'll do whatever it takes to make their family marvellously affluent.

If we apply Driscoll Thought, we soon understand that a man who fails to achieve wealth and success has only himself to blame if his wife leaves and takes up with some rich dude.

Sucks to be objectified, doesn't it?

107. Song of Solomon
The Song of Solomon or Song of Songs (Hebrew title שיר השירים, Shir ha-Shirim) is a book of the Hebrew Bible—Tanakh or Old Testament—one of the five megillot. It is also sometimes called by its title in the Vulgate, Canticum Canticorum, the "Canticle of Canticles." The title is later than the text <1>. The book consists of a cycle of poems about erotic love, largely in the form of a dialogue between a bridegroom and a bride. The Song of Solomon is not quoted by New Testament writers.

The text, read without allegory as a celebration of sexual love, appears to alternate between addressing a male object of affection and a female one. Some scholars suggest that the poems may be a series of antiphonal remarks and responses between a male and female pair, possibly created by one author rather than reflecting a genuine series of exchanged poems. Other scholars suggest that it is a collection of originally more independent poetry.

The name of the book comes from the first verse, "The Song of songs, which is of (or for) Solomon." Some believe the title "song of songs" attests to the greatness of the book. Rabbi Akiba declared, "Heaven forbid that any man in Israel ever disputed that the Song of Songs is holy. For the whole world is not worth the day on which the Song of Songs was given to Israel, for all the Writings are holy and the Song of Songs is holy of holies. (Mishnah Yadayim 3:5). Similarly, Martin Luther called it "das Hohelied," meaning, "the high song." <2>

104. Subjugation of women is absolutely central to these people's
view of the world.

Man must be dominant. If mistakes are made, the devil made him do it. Or a woman.

There's no humility here, no recognition of human frailty, no real plea for forgiveness.

It will be his wife's fault, but more than that, it will be the fault of his deep, disgusting problem -- homosexuality. Once again, they'll use the immorality of one of their own to attack another group.

It's not that he's a lying, adultering, illegal drug-using hypocrite. It's his wife letting herself go, and those evil satanic homosexual urges.

Sickening.

and did not "let herself go" -- I have seen her on the local news during one of Haggard's interviews, and even under trying circumstances she looked very pretty.

Of course, BESIDES THAT, Pastor Drisoll, should we not love and cherish and yes touch and love our spouses out of finer, loftier emotions than JUST LUST, you freakin' hypocritical fundie!?!

I cannot stand it when fundies try to give marital advice! They are so stupid and repressed!

Ted Haggard admits he bought Meth from gay prostitute

On top of all this she doesn't deserve to be insulted.

123. Most pastors I know do not have satisfying
free, sexual conversations and liberties with their wives.

Damn hubby just saw this and said maybe we don't have those problems because we have no religion. How fugging repressed are these people!

136. As a minister, what I find hilarious about this whole thing...
is that I've had conversations about sex with fellow pastors and everyone I know considers it a damn fine gift from God/Universal Consciousness/Truth. I'm thinking this is an extreme right wing hang up and these folks could use some input from the liberal clergy. :)

128. I remember;
When it was advice to wives to wear nothing but saran wrap and meet their husbands at the door clad as such, carrying his pipe, paper and martini for him to enjoy. Welcome to the enlightened age; 1384 ace (after the christian era).

while waiting for your wonderful husband, Dick Smoker, to come home and possibly reward your patience with some of that infrequent, bad sex - work out and have a facial, or just be depressed and eat.

135. I am not one to advocate violence
But it would serve Mr. Driscoll right if Mrs. Driscoll and Mrs. Haggard got together and each coshed him upside the head with a cast-iron skillet. Go ahead, Mr. Driscoll, take one for the team. Preferably in the balls, you lowlife misogynist scumbag!
