That flag was once very common in the states of the Confederacy.

Notably, several states in the Deep South resurrected it just in time to thumb their collective noses at efforts to desegregate the South. The flag is an incendiary, obnoxious symbol of the "bad old days" of lynching, betrayal, injustice and apartheid, and it was typically waving in the breeze prominently at Klan rallies.

If you didn't know this, you do now.

Frankly, you can stick that symbol of oppresion and hate where the moon don't shine. The only reason to proudly fly it is if you're a proud racist. And there's no more place for that flag in America than there is a Nazi flag. It belongs in a museum and in school textbooks.

There is a crowd still fighting the "War Between the States" that refuses to admit that the cornerstone of the Confederacy was its belief that blacks were not human. When we whitewash the horrors of our past, we become complicit in perpetrating that horror.
