Run Ryun Run!! This is friggin awesome!!
Kansas: GOP poll shows Jim Ryun trailing Nancy Boyda

I'm beginning to view the Ryun-Boyda race for the 2nd Congressional District in Kansas as a bit of a canary in a coal mine. The canary served as a warning. If the bird died, then miners knew dangerous gas was building up.

The 2nd District in Kansas isn't what you'd call a liberal hotbed. Although it includes part of the most liberal town in Kansas, the district was drawn by the Republican Legislature to dilute the power of all those progressives in my hometown.

Ryun, meanwhile, is an Olympic hero with huge backing from the Religious Right. Boyda has run this campaign with little to no national help until very recently.

Meanwhile, it's been confirmed that our not-so-beloved president is coming to Topeka to campaign for Ryun. George W. Bush will speak at a 6:20 p.m. rally at the Kansas Expocentre. You'll note that Bush isn't speaking or even getting close to Lawrence. He would not get a warm welcome here.

A little satirical look at it:

3. C'mon Nancy!
That would be so good to see this seat go Democratic, the Republicans would go crazy.

7. Supposedly Ryun has
extremely high negatives. This is what I was told two years ago during Boyda's first campaign. To be brutally honest about her, the essential reason she lost two years ago was because she was running as Republican Lite. The only thing that's different this year is that there's widespread disgust for Republicans.

I was in a room of Democratic women in 2004, and she was confronted with the gay marriage thing, and as she repeated the line about marriage being between one man and one woman, I looked around and literally saw women putting their checkbooks back in their purses. I myself did write her a check, but for half of what I would have, were she more supportive of such issues.

Jim Ryun is the kind of despicable Republican that needs to be returned home, but Nancy Boyda is hardly the champion of liberal Democratic causes people might think she is.

Me, I live in the third district and so have to contend with Dennis voted for the war, voted for torture Moore as my Congressman.

9. Not anymore she isn't.
She ran her campaign by the big boys last time. This time it has been all grass roots, her ideas and policy feelings and they are markedly different than the last run. I spent a good amount of time talking with her, especially about that marriage issue for the KEC. Listening to her was night and day from the last run.

13. So she's turned around
and supports gay marriage? Or at least civil unions? Her website looks completely silent on that.

14. That is what she told me
and several of us representing KEC. I believe her although it is hard for some of the GLBT community to trust that understandably.

I was astonished when I listened to her. I came to the meeting with a pretty closed mind after her last run. She is doing this herself this time with her ideas and views and by working really hard to get into areas she did not the last time. I have to say she seems to have been working her tail off for this.

Now, lets hope she wins and that she is what I think she really is.

I believe she told me that she was for marriage not civil unions because CU would give the impression of inequality but don't take that to the bank. My brain is on overload (aren't all of ours) and it was last summer when I spoke with her last. This seems to be what I recall. I know that that was a big issue for me and directly after speaking with her I wrote her a check. That is not something I do lightly, especially because of this issue that is a make or break deal for me.

Like many candidates that we are endorsing through the PAC she is not vocal about it. I hope that changes if she gets into office.

8. you know what's really fucking funny?
There was a rally on Saturday at the Lyon Co. fairgrounds with Governor wannabe Jim Barnett. The sign said "GOP Victory Tour". :wtf: Maybe they should call it the "Counting Your Chickens Before They've Hatched Tour". That is either the most self deluded thing or the most arrogant thing. Definitely pathetic. The last time someone had something called the "Victory Tour", it was The Jacksons.....and that didn't turn out so well either. :silly::crazy:

11. I have a Jim Ryun story...
When I was in elementary school in Santa Barbara he was living there, training for the Olympics. He used to come to our school and run, not sure why, we didn't have a great track, just a soccer field, but he would do sprints there. We would run with him when he was out there at our recess time; he used to let us beat him and we thought it was so great. After he won the medals our teacher showed us his picture on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

He inspired me to run, and I ran cross country and track all the way through high school.

Who knew he would turn out to be some Right Wing nut? I was really disappointed when I heard that, as an adult.

high school. He was a truly odd duck even then.

15. I have understood him to be an over zealous Christian.
However, I recently saw a comment that suggested he is now a Scientologist. Do you know if he is?
