Maybe another hundred thousand troops in Iraq would help? Don't count on it

War simulation in 1999 pointed out Iraq invasion problems

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A series of secret U.S. war games in 1999 showed that an invasion and post-war administration of Iraq would require 400,000 troops, nearly three times the number there now.

And even then, the games showed, the country still had a chance of dissolving into chaos.

In the simulation, called Desert Crossing, 70 military, diplomatic and intelligence participants concluded the high troop levels would be needed to keep order, seal borders and take care of other security needs.

The documents came to light Saturday through a Freedom of Information Act request by George Washington University's National Security Archive, an independent research institute and library.

"The conventional wisdom is the U.S. mistake in Iraq was not enough troops," said Thomas Blanton, the archive's director. "But the Desert Crossing war game in 1999 suggests we would have ended up with a failed state even with 400,000 troops on the ground."

3. "If they could just stop those darn insurgents."
Edited on Sat Nov-04-06 10:26 PM by niallmac
I heard that quote from a lady resident of the heartland of America
on NPR. She expressed concern over all the killing there
and was admitting to being pretty shaky in her support for the war.

The poor thing just felt those darn insurgents were preventing this
whole shock and awe circus from it's closing act.

Somehow this country, the USA, born of an intense desire to be rid of overseas control
cannot fathom that other countries and cultures could feel the same way
about us. It's just those darn insurgents.

4. Most discussions about Iraq regard Military solutions.
I feel that Political Solutions are far more important.

Any ideas?

5. The best Idea is
to get out as fast as possible to protect the troops. Then let them fight it out and be ready to help in the rebuilding process, while assuring that we are not going to invade anyone else.

6. What would have been the solution to the American Revolution
for King George? More troops seemed to inflame a desire to be left alone.

Having lived in the Middle East and other parts of this planet I have
seen how the U.S. in the visage of it's corporations treats other nations
that have what they want. We sell our illegal crap to them when it can't be
sold domestically. We cozy up to whatever power is in charge and help them
stay in power. Spreading democracy my ass.

We are the fuel on the fire. Our heavy handedness, our in your face push our weight around
lack of diplomacy that is at epic heights right now is what inflames people and
makes them hate us with every fiber.

How would we feel with a foreign military in our streets?
Too bad the military solution is all people want to talk about
because that solution is part of the problem.

The inconvenient truth is that we respect each other or we perish.
U.S. corporate foreign policy is not all evil but until Americans look at it honestly in the face
will we have any chance at a peoples revolt against
this U.S. military industrial complex that ruins our childrens futures.
