Remembering Oscar Romero
I heard a sermon this morning talking about Oscar Romero, the assassinated archbishop of San Salvador. He was assassinated in 1980 while administering mass by El Salvadoran Death squads.

It got me thinking about how John Negroponte is associated with death squads in Nicaragua, and is now the Director of National Intelligence.

I really wonder if we aren't truly under the rule of the fascists right now. I tend to think that we are. These people would not stop at "assassinating" Americans who might rise up in revolt if the Bushies steal another election.

I think that everything is in place to steal the election, except the outrage that could ensue if that happens.

Let's all remember that the polls show the Democrats beating the pants off the Republicans nationwide. If this doesn't happen, we have to stand up and fight back. I don't know what that will mean, or how it will happen. Count me in though! I won't stand for my son growing up in a fascist nation.

So Oscar Romero, I salute you, whether you are sainted or not, you were a powerful voice for the oppressed of El Salvador, and you died defending your right to speak out and to fight back.

I only hope that I can and will be as brave when the time comes to stand up for freedom and this once great nation.

Peace

1. protest the soa
If you would like your voice to be heard, attend the annual protest against the School Of the Americas in Columbus, Georgia this November 17-19. The SOA is where the US trains many of not all of these Central American death squads before unleashing them on their population. The SOA protest rarely gets any media attention, so you need to visit their website www.soaw.org for information.
I realize that most people would have no reason to visit Columbus, Georgia under any other circumstance, but the added numbers of protestors is always welcomed.

stop the training of death squads with our tax dollars.

2. You can do more than salute him
Ten years after his assassination, a process was started with the Vatican to have him named a saint. Just before John-Paul II died, his cause was authorized by the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and planning was started to have him beatified.

4. JP II's greatest failing
His tepid response to Romero's brutal assassination was a tremendous disappointment. No wonder Latin Americans are leaving the Church in droves. Sounds like he had a deathbed conversion.

(Come to think of it - both forms of fascism, I suppose. Powerful and predatory on vulnerable innocents).

10. Romero's martydom will be redeemed
when the RCC selects a liberationist as the next Pope. Watch. Benedict is a care taker. If tthey go with another European there will be a Schism because the latina america church is the only one that is growing.

11. As Anti Liberation Theology As Rome Has Been
that would in my opinion be a refreshing thing

I'm not Catholic, so it really won't affect my life, but it will affect millions of people in the world to have a L.T. as Pope

12.  “When I fed the poor, they called me a saint..."
"...When I asked why are they poor, they called me a communist.”
-- Archbishop Oscar Romero

RIP, Archbishop Romero. Liberation Theology was probably Catholicism's last hope (and that's sort of a bittersweet sentiment for this atheist...).
