ILLINOIS DUers - JUST CALLED OBAMA - UNDECIDED ON FILIBUSTER
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 03:08 PM by WildEyedLiberal
He will vote no to confirm but is undecided on a filibuster - that is what his staffer just told me. He asked for my zip code so I am restricting this plea to Illinois DUers only, though the rest of you PLEASE EMAIL AND FAX!

Senator Barack Obama
713 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
(202) 224-2854
(202) 228-4260 fax
(202 228-1404 TDD
http://www.obama.senate.gov/contact/

PLEASE be polite and respectful. Rude calls/emails may convince him that only crazy fringe lunatics oppose Alito. We are NOT crazy fringe lunatics and we need to make Obama aware of how destructive an Alito judgeship would be!

Don't assume that just because you live in a blue state with Dem senators that they will automatically support the filibuster! EVERYONE needs to call ALL their Senators NOW!

BTW - Durbin's office said he was FOR a filibuster, so I haven't posted his contact info.

2. Called Obama at 7:40 this AM...
Is it ethical to keep calling? I figure he's heard from me on this already.

4. I really don't think it would hurt
I don't know if they ask for your name or not... I just gave mine. I'm sure they're hearing from so many people that they'll forget who they've already talked to.

5. "undecided"
means he'll vote for cloture, and is preparing his response to the base, IMO.

Hope I'm wrong.

9. NO.
He needs to either abstain or vote no. The R's need 3/5 of the members present, assuming a quorum (2/3 of the Senate) is there. Merely being absent will not suffice.

33. No...3/5ths of ALL MEMBERS. Does someone have the exact text?
One organization was suggesting that the Senators who wanted to be "absent" go over to Walter Reed Hospital and talk to disabled vets.

10. my letter to Barack
Dear Senator Obama,
I am writing today to urge you to lend any support you can to the defeat of Mr. Alito’s nomination to the Supreme Court. I am convinced that his support for the Unitary Executive theory will undermine the checks and balances created by our founding fathers. Please support any effort to derail this nomination including support of a filibuster if necessary. While I am not a scholar of the senate I believe that you have several options to support this request such as voting against cloture or abstaining from the vote so the majority party cannot reach the required number of votes. I will leave that up to your discretion but want to convey my dissatisfaction with this nominee and the remarkable lack of candor he displayed to the Judiciary committee. Please oppose this man with every fiber of your being. Thank you.

Terry Reed

about restricting to Illinois DUers - he is a rising star in the party - call as a constituent of the Democratic party and tell them as I did that I know he is an up and coming star in the party and that you have been impressed with him and to STAND UP FOR ALL OF US NOW!!!!

I was just warning that his office did ask for zip code - unlike Durbin's office - but your response is a good talking point for non-Illinoisans.

No problem. Not question about zip code.
Just call and announce where you are from.

22. Just called Obama
I'm live in Illinois. Just called him to tell him to support a filabuster. Also mentioned about being the Pres. of Plasterers local 5 and how we supported him when he was running for the Senate. Met him at a rally at Navy Pier.

Or better yet, call your local area code AND the DC office.

34. All voice mail boxes were full
But I did send an email:

Hi Senator,
My name is Wendy XXXXX and I live in Naperville. I was relieved to learn that you oppose the nomination of Sam Alito. I too am concerned about an increase of presidential powers undermining the responcibilities of the congress. This shift that the Republicans are pushing is not in line with my values and ideals I see as the America I know and love. Frankly speaking I feel the abuses of the executive branch are already alarming. I feel Sam Alito's views will only enable these abuses. So for those reasons I feel it is important not only to oppose the nomination but also to oppose the cloture vote. We must try. I could not go to sleep tonight without knowing I could tell my teenage daughters that I tried to do what I could to oppose this judge to the supreme court.

Thank you, I'm proud to have you represent me.

36. great--but emails are not enough. you've either got to call
and leave a message or fax him.

i talked to a staffer of his today and yesterday, and several times earlier in the week. i faxed him on monday and will be doing it again later tonight. my seventeen year old daughter called his marion office and left a message. (she watched kerry's speech friday and was horrified at what she heard, about who this man is that will sit on the supreme court--and from my memory he didn't even mention abortion). so she called obama and durbin (she left a message on his springfield line)

i would suggest you write down what you want to tell them and go out and fax them. here are a couple threads i started and you can get their phone numbers and fax numbers off it. (and if you want to call anyone else..?)

for durbin and obama--make sure you give them your town and zip code so they know they're committed to you. thanks for doing what you're doing. ten years from now your daughters and my daughter will either thank us or at least they will know how hard we tried.
