WE CAN STOP ALITO THIS WEEKEND
(I had not been TOO optimistic today, but after hearing that Feinstein (My Senator) had changed her mind, I have renewed hope - I am NOT ready to give up - Kpete)

WE CAN STOP ALITO THIS WEEKEND
By Bob Fertik
Created 2006-01-27 15:34
The last 24 hours have been amazing.

Early Thursday afternoon, I broke the news that Senator John Kerry would lead a filibuster against Judge Sam Alito if he could get 41 Senators to sustain the filibuster. Three hours later, CNN confirmed my story.

Naturally, the White House freaked out and told Senator Bill Frist to schedule a cloture vote as quickly as possible - Monday at 4:30 p.m. - to prevent Democrats from uniting behind Kerry.

Then the White House called its media whores at the NY Times (David Kirkpatrick), AP (Jesse Holland), Pentagon Post (Charles Babington), and CNN (Miles O'Brien) and told them to trash John Kerry for daring to challenge the will of Emperor Bush.

2. It is possible - but the GOP have 60 public comits to closure
The 52 Republicans with statements supporting closure added Olympia Snowe today, and we have the 7 Dems Byrd of West Virginia, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Daniel Akaka of Hawaii, Ken Salazar of Colorado and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota all on record, at this point.

Changing minds is the Dem task this weekend.

7. Akaka, Salazar and Dorgan Have Not Said They Will Vote For Cloture
as far as I know.

Can you confirm that they will vote for cloture? That's not the same as saying they don't support the filibuster.

9. If you live in any of these states...
Please make those phone calls!

I'm calling them too, and it does seem like they are tallying votes from non-residents, but I'm sure it has much more impact if you are a constituent.

Personally I think a phone call is better than an email or a fax, because the staffers manning the phones will be going on and on about how much phone traffic there was, but I'm sure it all helps.

Just please ask the Senators to either support the filibuster or simply abstain.

16. None of our Dems have stated they'd vote FOR cloture
I haven't heard that - I've only heard they won't support a filibuster, and that can change.

12. It is NOT a done deal. Harriet Miers was stopped by public opinion...
before any vote. There is still filibuster, cloture, and the final vote. People can can minds over the weekend.

Remember, it often happens this way in democracy. People are not aware of what is going on until it is almost too late and then they get mad and THEN let their will be known.
