Help needed re: Kerry joke
I know this is way passe and that we have far more important and (hopefully) exciting things to talk about tonight, but I have to ask for your help.

Our neighbor (a really nice guy in spite of this) is a Navy *bot. I made some yard signs over the weekend which say "Kerry botched a joke" and "Bush botched a war". My dh was talking to him tonight and told him that JK had made the same/similar joke in other speeches.

Does anyone have a link to a source for this? We heard it on the radio last week, but don't remember the source quoted.

Your help is much appreciated!

1. He made the jke without botching it on previous occasions,
and when he told it properly, it clearly and unmistakeably slammed Bush, not the troops. You'll have to google or wait for a better-armed DUer to show up to get the exact wording.

5. He forgot a word. I am sure it never happened to them?

They should stop listening to the media if they do not understand how the media are screwed up.

They do not have to support him, but being mad at him rather than at Bush and the media is being uninformed, and it is dangerous for a Dem.

6. I am in no way mad at him
and the other dems I work with were steaming mad. I think that a lot of Americans will never get it, so that may blow his chances which is incredibly sad. He was never talking about the troops, only Bush who got us stuck in Iraq.

8. They were steaming mad because they did not hear the truth.
The media did not say it (surprise, surprise), and the dems panicked rather than acknowledging what happened (a bad joke) and using that for pouncing on Bush.

12. Remember the dumb Dems who believed Clintons really trashed the White House, too?
How sad. People believed that BushInc lie for MONTHS.

15. Any Dem
that could believe even for a split second that John Kerry, a VETERAN would insult the troops, are just plain taken by the media and Rovian game play. They should be ashamed. Oh and by the way the one's who started this swift boating never ever served.

17. I think that he will need to find a way to
reach people who were offended. It may be very very hard (or impossible) but if he can find a forum to explain that it was a mistake - he's human and that he never intended it to be about the troops, whose needs he has advocated for for 35 years.

I hope he will continue to speak on Iraq - where his position is closer to the majority of Americans' position. I also suspect that the Republican were likely monitoring him 100% of the time - had he not made this gaffe, they likely would have taken any negative comment on Iraq and spun it the same way. (It resonates with the RW base because of Vietnam) The Republicans doing this knew the truth.

11. Defend Clinton for years for dropped pants, scold Kerry for a dropped pronoun
Or did your Dem friends actually BELIEVE that pile of crap BushInc said about Kerry?

Did they blame Gore for saying he invented the internet - or was that a BushInc lie?

Did they blame Clinton for trashing the White House or was that a BushInc lie?

18. Ask them if they aren't angrier about...
...* saying "Bring 'em on." Ask them if they aren't angrier about Bush's pretending to look for WMDs in his office. Ask them if they aren't angrier about the many, many, MANY flubbed jokes that * has made.

What Kerry said is silly, and sure he botched the crack at *, but shit, all you have to do is go to www.dubyaspeak.com to see all the inanities the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue spews and how they overwhelm one missing work.

What We Really Owe Our Troops

Last week America witnessed a ridiculous onslaught of political backlash, intense media coverage, non-stop scrutiny and outrage over comments made by Senator John Kerry to a group of students in California. As a veteran who served for over 14 months in Iraq, I am insulted - not by Senator Kerry, but, by the media outlets and politicians who capitalized on this botched joke.

The obsession with Senator Kerry's remarks has once again enabled politicians to evade the real problems facing our service members and has perpetuated a political climate void of any accountability. It is American politics at its worst and at this, I am truly outraged.

After Senator Kerry's remarks, White House press secretary Tony Snow repeatedly demanded an apology from Senator Kerry, insisting that he owed this to "our troops." Why do we continue to sit idly by and accept this blatant hypocrisy? For the last three years, I have wanted an apology or at least a modicum of accountability from this administration for the war in Iraq and the treatment of our returning veterans.

Nobody is addressing MY outrage. I am deeply distressed by the fact that our military is overstretched and that the men and women on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan are fighting without the proper equipment. I am distressed by the fact that my fellow service members are returning home to a Veterans Administration that is under funded and overcrowded and that my friends are having to wait over six months for basic health care. I am distressed by the rapidly mounting human and political costs of our two wars and I am OUTRAGED that there is no plan in place to deal with any of these urgent issues.
