Cameo Island being evacuated in WA State San Juans!
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 08:50 PM by icymist
Just heard on chanel 5 news, they're telling people to 'e-mail' their vote tomorrow for their polling places will be closed!

Will get a link when it is availabe. Evacuatiion due to very bad weather, namely flooding and mudslides and people could become stranded.

11. Sorry, I was typing fast.
And I wasn't sure if it was part of the San Juans, but wanted to give a sense of where it was. Also, I just heard that Mount Vernon is sandbagging the entire town. Me thinks election officials need to be watching Western Washington very closely in as we are under a declared 'state of emergency'!

44. Mount Vernon
The Skagit river runs right through old downtown. It's very high. Work parties are planned to sandbag downtown. In the last floods we managed to head it off. I live on a hill overlooking the town and have been watching the river through binocs. We've lost a lot of trees in the last couple of days. It's hard to convince people that it isn't rainy here when they see this on the news.

5. Camano Island is probably flooding
The rain here has been nonstop for days and that area is very prone to flooding. It's not in the San Juans, but it's in the NW corner of the state.

I don't know what their population is, but they must have some way of getting to vote. Can't they open polling places on the mainland? (Camano is accessible by bridge, not ferry). I suppose it's possible the bridge is going to be flooded over.

I can't imagine Camano Island is being totally evacuated. I just drove over the Snohomish River and it's the highest I've ever seen it.
I've heard the town of Snohomish may get water tonight.

17. Sorry for doubting you
You are right. The bridge will most likely be under water and folks will be stranded if they don't get out. I appologize.

It's crazy out there. I think Route 9 is going to be flooded as well through the Snohomish valley and possibly up to Monroe.

I haven't heard a call for sandbagging in Snohomish yet but I think the town is gonna get bad.

14. Seattle Times link and alternate voting info
"The closure of Snoqualmie Elementary will affect 997 voters registered to vote there. Those voters should go to the Snoqualmie Fire Station, 37600 S.E. Snoqualmie Parkway in Snoqualmie, to vote tomorrow.

"Three other polling places in Carnation and Fall City could potentially be shut down because they are near the Snoqualmie and Tolt rivers: River View School District Office in Carnation, and Fall City Elementary and Fall City Fire Station Dist. 27 in Fall City.

"To find out whether they will be closed tomorrow, call 206-296-VOTE or check online at www.metrokc.gov/elections. Road access could potentially be limited to Stillwater Elementary and Vincent Community Club, both in Carnation.

"If King County closes those polls because of flooding, voters registered there will need to cast a provisional ballot at alternate polling locations listed below."

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003355126_webfloodvoting06.html

mentions a web form you can fill out to get a ballot emailed to you from King County, which you must print out and snail-mail.

15. Wait everyone - Icymist is right! ETA: For King & Pierce County
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 09:29 PM by spuddonna
Check this out: http://www.king5.com/sharedcontent/northwest/specialreport/stories/NW_110606WABpollingplacesDS.1098f4ff.html
From the page:
"...Voters who are affected by the flooding have many options for casting a ballot. These options include:
* Request an e-mail ballot. Voters can request a ballot online at this link Requests received by 7 p.m. today (11/06/06) will be e-mailed a ballot and affidavit to return. All ballots must be postmarked by Election Day. E-mailed ballots will be set aside to ensure the voters' registration status."

How about we give people a little time to find links, ok? WA state is experiencing some really intense flooding right now!

ETA - These email ballots are in effect for King and Pierce Counties. Snohomish uses only mail ballots: http://www1.co.snohomish.wa.us/Templates/Department/DepartmentBase.aspx?NRMODE=Published&NRORIGINALURL=%2fDepartments%2fAuditor%2fDivisions%2fElections_Voting%2fFrequentlyAskedQuestions%2ehtm&NRNODEGUID=%7b378EFD89-646C-4959-821F-5A05A229A07F%7d&NRCACHEHINT=Guest#Mail%20Ballot
"Why did Snohomish County chose to go Vote by Mail?
In 2005 the state legislature passed Local Option Vote by Mail legislation. Under this legislation, each county governing body had the authority to convert to all mail ballot election environment. In January, 2006, the Snohomish County Council passed a motion to convert to all mail ballot voting. For more information, see the all mail ballot plan for Snohomish County"

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Troll Beating!

28. The confusion arises from King5's handling of their broadcast....
which still states three alternative voting processes: Vote by e-mail, vote by absentee ballot, or vote by provisional ballot. If you follow the link provided, then it is mentioned that the vote by e-mail is with a special, one time absentee ballot. It's the television broadcast that is unclear and I merely reported what I had heard. I could not have explained it more clearly at the time with the information that was available.

Everyone from the area is on edge with the weather and the folks out of state are understandable worried about voter fraud. Folks have been disenfranchised with so many scams in the past, anything out of the ordinary was sure to raise some red flags. Your post set off inner alarms for me too and I know that you are a good Democrat and DUer. Now we all know what is going on....Thank you.

I hope you are safe and dry. I'm wondering if I should fill my bathtub in the event the drinking water is compromised. I'm high up so I won't get hit with flooding in the house unless my storm drain clogs.
