Wanna smell fear? Real fear? Dig in to this...
"For Democrats, Even a Gain May Feel Like a Failure" reads the headline on the NY Times page.

The media savvy among us won't be surprised by the author.

Adam Nagourney.

Hack.

Sad hack.

Dig:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/07/us/politics/07memo.html?hp&ex=1162962000&en=03ec0756df1a73c8&ei=5094&partner=homepage

On election eve, the rough consensus among officials in both parties was that the Democrats would win the House but come just short of capturing the six seats they needed in the Senate. There was wide disagreement, though, about how many House seats Democrats might win.

Many of these predictions had been based on polls showing that President Bush, the Republican Party and Congress were extraordinarily unpopular. But going into Election Day, at least 20 House seats and probably 3 Senate seats were tied or close to it, no matter what the national polls say.

So, what if Democrats just squeak to victory in the House by a seat or two? What if Democrats win just three seats in the Senate or — unlikely but not impossible — even two?

You can read the rest if you want. I did, and it's a hoot. According to My Man Adam, the Democrats taking ONLY the House, and ONLY by a small margin, will equal a terrible defeat that might lead to mass suicide.

Seriosuly. That line is in there: Mr. Cook put it more succinctly. “I think you’d see a Jim Jones situation — it would be a mass suicide,” he said.

I don't know about you all, but a one-seat majority in one branch of the government would be, for me, a success story of such unutterable magnitude that I cannot begin to express it.

Conyers, chairman. Slaughter, chairman. Frank, chairman. Waxman, chairman. Pelosi: SPEAKER, next to Cheney during the 2007 SOTU. 'Nuff said.

Subpoena power.

Checks and balances.

Etc.

So enjoy Mr. Nagourney. That is the spin of someone who already thinks he is beaten. Maybe he is, and maybe he isn't...and that's what tomorrow is for.

But damn me if this isn't the silliest spin I have ever seen in my life.

5. Your right.
Wait till Wednesday, when all the wing-nuts on the AM dial start blathering about how the terrorists won. They repeat that shit all week long and the mainstream media (a faithful echo chamber) will repeat it--in their own way of course but it will rear it's asinine head for sure.

2. Well, hell; it's that tool Nagourney.
I wouldn't have expected anything less of him; he never misses an opportunity to shit in the Democrats' cornflakes. The fact is, it's a kind of pass-fail exam. One seat more than 50% is a majority. With a majority the Dems get to control the agenda. While it would be delightful to pick up an extra 20 seats, all we really need is one. One seat means we win, and Adam Nagourney can kiss my ass.

3. I'd love a 15 or 20 seat majority, but I'll take it even if it's 1 seat
It's still light-years ahead of what we have right now.

6. I don't understand this
I think that most Democrats would be elated even if we only control the House.

We can block all Republican legislation

You're supposed to be discouraged by it.

Or something.

9. i enjoy your columns william
i don't see any way that the democrats don't win the house. i think their worst case scenario is a gain of 18 seats, and the best case scenario is about 40.

their worst case scenario in the Senate is a gain of 3 seats, with a realistic chance at 6.

13. Nope, no mass suicides.
Most likely increased calls for Conyers to begin investigations.

15. I'm embarrassed to say this, but Nagourney went to my high school
2 class years senior to mine (he's a class of 1972, I'm a class of 1974).

And I was in Girl Scouts with his sister during elementary and junior high years.

Another alum from my school, Matthew Wald (class of 1972), also works at the NYT.

In fact, a certain number of alumni from my high school infest the MSM these days:
Phil Reisman, Matthew Wald, Adam Nagourney, and Laura Harris
