''The Gunner's Dream,'' by Pink Floyd
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 12:48 PM by OneAngryDemocrat

The Gunner's Dream (Waters)

Floating down through the clouds
Memories come rushing up to meet me now.
In the space between the heavens
and in the corner of some foreign field
I had a dream.
I had a dream.

Good-bye Max...

Good-bye Ma.

After the service when you're walking slowly to the car
And the silver in her hair shines in the cold November air
You hear the tolling bell
And touch the silk in your lapel

And as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band
You take her frail hand
And hold on to the dream.

A place to stay...

Enough to eat...

Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
Where you can speak out loud

About your doubts and fears
And what's more no-one ever disappears
You never hear their standard issue kicking in your door.

You can relax on both sides of the tracks
And maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control

And everyone has recourse to the law
And no-one kills the children anymore...

And no one kills the children anymore...

Night after night
Going round and round my brain
His dream is driving me insane.

In the corner of some foreign field
The gunner sleeps tonight.
What's done is done.
We cannot just write off his final scene.

Take heed of his dream.
Take heed.

9. I've been wanting to get that one
I think I'll ask my mom for it for Christmas. I'm kind of hard to buy for because I'm a minimalist. I don't believe, being an adult, that I deserve anything for Christmas, but my mother insists. A PF album and a Led Zep DVD should be plenty for me.

5. But still the dark stain spreads between their shoulderblades
A mute reminder of the poppy fields and graves
When the fight was over
We spent what they had made
But

In the bottom of our hearts we felt the final cut.

Nice post!

7. Wow!
I'm listening to it right now...easily Water's best work, and greatly illustrated here. Take heed indeed. Well done.

11. I'll have to see about that.
I don't have the album, but I don't see how it could possibly beat the Wall.
If you should go skating,
On the thin ice of modern life,
Dragging behind you the silent reproach,
Of a million tear-stained eyes,
Dont be surprised when a crack in the ice,
Appears under your feet.
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind,
With your fear flowing out from behind,
You as you claw the ice.

Absolute genius.

12. The Final Cut
The Final Cut is a songwriter's masterpiece. I urge you to listen to it more than once, and I'm sure you'll agree. It's more subtle, but musically and lyrically better-crafted. The Wall is better thematically, but The Final Cut is much more political and poignant.

17. I have a serious craving for Floyd now.
I'm listening to Zep and I just can't pry myself away. Hats Off to (Roy) Harper - Traditional. Tenth song on LZ III. Interestingly, it's a tribute to Roy Harper, a close friend of Pink Floyd.

14. The Final Cut is like sides 5 and 6 of The Wall. Recommended.
Jesus, Jesus what's it all about
trying to clout these little ingrates into shape
when I was their age all the lights went out
there was no time to whine and mope about

and even now part of me flies over
Dresden at angels one five
though they'll never fathom it behind my
sarcasm desperate memories lie...

like the moment when the brakes lock
and you slide towards the big truck
you stretch the frozen moments with your fear
and you'll never hear their voices
and you'll never see their faces
you have no recourse to the law anymore

and as the windshield melts
my tears evaporate
leaving only charcoal to defend
finally I understand
the feelings of the few
ashes and diamonds
foe and friend
we were all equal in the end

18. Thanks for that. Can you do a picture depiction of "The Fletcher Memorial Home"...
...replacing the tyrants named in the song with today's tyrants? I wish we had a modern-day Pink Floyd to lyrically address criminally wayward Bush with the same emotion that Roger Waters' lyrics evoke.

19. Just saw Roger Waters...
...in Phoenix last month. During his "Animals" set he floated out the pig, which had "End Bush's War" and that "losing habeas corpus was important" painted on it. The audience loved it with the exception of one knuckle-head who yelled that "if it weren't for Bush, we'd be listening to the concert in Arabic."

That is one of my favorite lines from a song ever.

And 'The Final Cut' is my absolute favorite Pink Floyd album. I'm gonna have to go listen to it right now....
