Horsefeathers. Prior to the Great Depression, caused or at least worsened by goverment actions, there were lots of Negro schoolteachers, even college professors, as well as business owners, pharmacists, dentists, doctors and even a few lawyers. They were just in segregated parts of town. Then came the Government, to "take care of them". Additional factors were the large scale migrations of Blacks from the rural and small town south to northern (and left coast) cities. Again, with the government to help them, to teach the women that they didn't need a man, and in fact that they were a liability, black society was devastated, a devastation which continues to this day, in spite of all the Great Societies, Wars on Poverty and so forth ad nasuem. Of course with the Great Society and subsequent programs, the rot began to spread to the "white", "oriental" and "hispanic" communities as well. People, particularly young men, grew up unqualified for anything other than porter or chicken cook.

Meanwhile the evil and immoral military was providing many young men with a way to regain their manhood and to earn their way out of the Ghetto, Barrio, or semi-urban trailer park, as the case may have been.

3. I think it's as much about sexism as racism.

The writer seems to feel his manhood is threatened when women get ahead in life. According to him, the military provided many young men with "a way to regain their manhood". (That phrase always makes me think that they lost their genitals somewhere).

Yeah, it was GREAT being in the army for a black in the 30s, 40s and 50s. At BEST, you got to be a cook. Mainly, you got to do all the dirty work, and weren't even allowed into battle unless the whites were desperate. And all your officers were white. What a maroon.

9. Wow he completely managed to leave out the parts about how race pogroms

and riots periodically destroyed whatever black middle class districts had managed to grow within American cities, and how blacks in the early 20th century moved from the no-jobs rural south to northern cities in order to GET WORK in factories, not welfare, and how blacks were the first to get fired in Depression Era plant closings, and how they sometimes even lost their jobs due to labor agitation against their hiring.
Newsflash for Freeptards: the ghettoization and impoverishment of urban blacks was a sociological catastrophe in the north long before the Great Society war to end poverty was even proposed. It followed, without a pause, the catastrophe caused by southern apartheid and impoverishment of rural blacks.
