I voted, but had to show my ID, I have never ever been asked |
|
to show my ID before in all the 21 years I have been voting.
The ladies at my precinct said I was the first one today.
WOW, I wonderrrrrrrrrr whyyyyyyyyyy.
Because I belong to the DNC maybe. That's the only thing I can think of.
What a bunch a bunch of crooks.. If I didn't have one I wouldn't have been able to vote.

Did they know you belong to the DNC? I had to show one today for the first time, too, but I'm OK with it. Why should proper ID for voting be any different (or less important) than getting carded for alcohol or tobacco?

that Florida HAD passed a new law requiring photo ID. You would think I would have known this! Nope, not me.

7. 26 states now legally require photo ID |
|
When I voted today in Louisiana, I knew that LA is not one of those states, but I also knew the first thing they would say, when I walked up to the table, was "can I see your photo ID, please?" Now, I know all those poll workers, and they know me, as we are all retired teachers. I had purposely left my purse and drivers license in the car, and brought in my Voter Registration card only. I told them I didn't have my license, but gave them my Voter Reg. card. They all looked confused. I told them that LA doesn't require a photo ID, and they hesitantly shook their heads that, yes, I was right. So, they said I would have to sign a special form, and they began looking for the forms. They looked thru all kinds of manila envelopes...for about 10 minutes. The line behind me grew longer. Finally they found a form, I signed it, one of the workers signed it, and I was allowed to vote.

8. The young guy in front of me was asked, but I wasn't... |
|
Maybe it was because I had my three kids with me, but I still thought it was strange that they asked the twenty-something guy, and not me.

9. Truthfully, I was always surprised in years past... |
|
...that I didn't have to show some form of ID before voting. Anyone could come up and give a name and vote under that person's name, if they were so inclined. One likes to think no one would do that, but theoretically it would have been possible. IDs required for the first time now in Ohio - and even though the motives behind the new rules may be questionable, the rule itself seems entirely reasonable to me. There's a wide enough range of acceptable IDs that someone without a driver's license, for instance, would still be able to come up with some form of proof that they are who they say they are. Not as big of a deal as some have made it out to be, IMO.

13. THAT'S a problem, then. |
|
As I said, I don't think it's unreasonable to have to show proof of identity, but it should be true for everyone. When the rule is selectively applied, it's descrimination.

11. I never showed an ID in Mass, nor in California |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 06:22 PM by Gormy Cuss
As I recall in Mass they required something to verify where you lived if it was the first time you were voting from that precinct or if you hadn't voted in X prior elections (an 'inactive' voter) but if you had your utility bills that and signing an affidavit attesting that you were still a resident of the address and had no legal impairment to voting were all you needed to do.
Here, we show them our voter card mailed by the county elections clerk and that is sufficient. Without one voters can opt to show ID to prove their address.

it was kind of weird when the four little old ladies working the voter table made me drop my trousers
Even that would have been okay if it hadn't been for the giggling
