7. I have no idea...
I think the only Republicans that we have a shot of persuading are Chafee and Snowe.

8. Oh, wait!! I found this...
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/politics/20060127-1107-alito.html

<SNIP> Senior Republican Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska also threw his support to Alito. Stevens said he closely monitored Alito's commitment during his confirmation hearings to “respect” past rulings when it comes to Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court's landmark abortion rights decision.

“As I vote to confirm his nomination, I do so under the assumption that Judge Alito will uphold this commitment,” said Stevens, who supports abortion rights.

I'm going to send him an email anyway... couldn't hurt.

10. I'm flattered, but I don't understand why you like it so much. Ted, John
& Ron your faves in the Senate?

12. Oh. I see you're a fellow Oregonian. That has something to do with it, I
take it? Personally, I'm a bit suspicious of Ron, but I'm jazzed that he's going to go to the wall on this one.

Since I see you're a big repro rights person, did you catch Sarah Weddington when she was in town last weekend? I missed the NARAL dinner this year; I'd have loved to have heard her speak.

13. No, I didn't see her.

I haven't seen Weddington speak since college, but my weekends are pretty full lately, especially since Portland isn't "in town" for me, (there are other cities in which people are also effectively involved in activism in this state, you know).

If you want my advice: don't be suspicious of Ron; be suspicious of those who don't support Ron. And those who make judgments about a senator's character or positions on issues overall based on one or two votes, as opposed to what he or she has been doing throughout his or her entire career. I'm happy Ron is taking this opportunity to redeem himself for some decisions he made in 2005 that I thought were questionable for a variety of reasons--mainly, that they were so unlike him and so unlikely to be in accordance with his established legislative, political and personal values. He obviously didn't truly love Reid's rumored "unity or bust" strategy. I hope he makes future attempts to clear the air.

14. Well, Ron has scored big points with me this week.
And I do know Stump Town isn't the only place for liberals in Oregon. Sorry to have made an obtuse assumption.
