I remember past election evenings
in 2000, getting so drunk, disgusted and distraught that I couldn't sleep for weeks. During the recount battles I stayed glued to the television and the internet, fervently searching for an iota of good news, only to be stabbed in the heart by the SCOTUS.

in 2002, getting so disgusted and distraught that I stayed in bed for over a week, refusing to talk to anyone. The scene that stayed with me and haunted me most was James Carville on the set of CNN placing a wastepaper basket over his head.

in 2004, I watched the returns at DUer Ulysses' house. Around 11 p.m. I went home and got drunk. The next day at work everyone avoided me. I was completely defeated and my mood was blacker than asphalt.

now it's a NEW FUCKING DAY.

and I'm STILL going to get drunk :hangover:

:)

I remember 2000 where all of the signs--that were historically accurate--predicted a Kerry win. The excitement, the relief, the anticipation. And the 11th hour shift in data.

And here we are again. The same signs pointing in the same direction.

4. I remember '94
when the dems lost control. That was a bummer and there was no DU or internet back then (or at least we didn't have it yet).

5. I watched the 2004 returns is a hospital waiting room
My son was having surgery for a spinal chord injury from a brutal assault. My wife and I were hundredds of miles from home and surrounded by complete strangers. This was San Francisco and most of the people were minorities and obviusly sharing our hopes that all our hard work would pay off. We went through the ecstasy followed by the agony that night. I will never forget it. After two more horrible years hope is back and after two years in wheelchair our son is walking again. This is going to be a good night.

8. That is a horrible election night story.
I am officially over feeling sorry for myself. If you can feel hopeful, then so can I.

Glad to hear you son is doing better.

9. I just remember the last minute swing to the GOP all 3 times
and won't be at all surprised if it happens again. I just hope the margins are wide enough to compensate for that 4% vote flip we've seen in the last two elections.

It's the one night I wish I could drink. Maybe I'll just take a muscle relaxer and sleep for 16 hours...

10. I'm surprisingly calm tonight.
Just sitting here doing Spanish, refreshing DU every so often.

2004, I was a bundle of nerves. Couldn't eat all Election Day, and then didn't have an appetite for several days afterward.

I hope it's a good sign.

19. At lunch today, my husband insisted he remembered me
getting hammered on election night 2004.

I told him I stayed up quite late - still hopeful for Florida and Ohio - and didn't get upstairs to bed until 1:30 or 2:00, long after he'd gone to bed. I'm sure I was nursing a beer, but I certainly didn't get drunk.

It turned out he was confusing election night with the presidential debates. Yes, I did go through quite a few glasses of wine on debate nights. It was the only way I could stomach watching them.

26. Me, too.
2000 I was miserably pregnant and disgusted. 2002 I was drunk and AIM chatting with other DUers, commiserating. 2004 is just a blur. I remember it being one awful roller coaster ride.

I'm breaking out the wine either way, for a celebration or to drown sorrows. I think tonight will be different, though :)
