before I fax it. Thank you!
Dear ________
I am writing to strongly urge you to not only vote no on the confirmation of Judge Alito but to vote no on cloture as well. I realize this may be a risky move for you to make politically but I implore you to uphold the values of the party to which you belong. If you feel that you are not politically able to vote no on cloture, I urge to abstain from voting altogether.
Our great nation stands at a crossroads today. We have many problems to sort out in the coming months. We can choose the path of least resistance or we can choose a path of opposition for what is right. We must not forget the roots which tether us to the tree of equality, social justice, compassion, freedom and liberty in a government of prudent checks and balances. We owe our children and grandchildren a system of justice that will represent all Americans, no matter how wealthy they are, what color skin they have, what gender, what disability or sexual orientation they have. They deserve to reap a government sown from wisdom and a belief in the inherent equality of humanity.
Judge Alito’s record is disturbing in that he holds a seeming disregard for racial minorities, women, the disabled, and the working class. His record indicates that he is far too willing to side with big business over the “little guy”. Judge Alito’s willingness to embrace the theory of a unitary executive gave me great pause, particularly in light of the disturbing recent disclosure of the Administration’s domestic warrant-less spying program. Furthermore, his support of presidential signing statements is similarly troubling.
Judge Alito's judicial record shows a conservative bias that will be felt for generations, like the waves felt from the rock thrown from a distant shore.
As you know, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is a moderate who has cast crucial swing votes on many important issues. The nomination of a right-wing ideologue to fill her shoes should not be an acceptable choice to a representative who was chosen by the people who asked you to carry the banner of the Democratic party in our stead.
Most Sincerely, Silly Goose

4. Two things caught my eye |

I think "warrant-less" with a hyphen is more correct and the correct word is "stead" not "steed" at the very end. Nice letter overall.

5. make "warrantless" one word and clean up "rock thrown into the |
|
sea to the lapping waves upon a distant shore" -- Maybe "causing a series of waves to lap upon distant shores".
I'd delete the line about Alito being "eminently qualified". He's an ideologue and we don't need ideologues on the Supreme Court.

Very clear and concise. Just some MINOR points:
1st para--take out the 2nd 'politically.'
2nd para--"We can choose the path of least resistance or we can choose a path of fighting for what is right ('opposition' seems confusing in there).
3rd para--'warrant-less' (hyphen) 4th para--"like a rock,"--(comma)
5th para--"an acceptible choice to you, as a representative who was chosen..." etc "stead" (not steed) ---------------
IS GOOD -- SEND IT!

Your first sentence contains too many double negatives: "I am writing to strongly urge you to not only vote no on the confirmation of Judge Alito but to vote no on cloture as well."
I'd suggest changing ot to "I am writing to strongly urge you to vote no on the confirmation of Judge Alito, and to also vote "No" on cloture.
