You don't count the votes now and say "We don't have the votes" if you really want to run the game.

You say, "We expect solid support but we're going to DO WHAT'S RIGHT. Enough is enough."

Then you let Kerry start, do the "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" thing...then shame the turncoat Democrats into supporting the filibuster because, otherwise, they will look like turncoats (and after all, "they can't stand the truth"). Then the turncoat Democrats have two choices: 1) enunciate their treachery in supporting an anti-Roe, tyranny supporting, right winger or 2) applaud Kerry's courage and fall in line.

Harry, use the gutlessness of the reluctant Democrat Senators for your own purposes.

DO NOT BLOW THIS. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.

"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" Filibuster, he won!!!

Reid's Says Not Enough Votes for Filibuster

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said on Friday he and fellow Democrats lack the votes to block President George W. Bush's nomination of conservative appeals judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court

We need a Tackle eligible to pull, and lay out the Defensive end

We need a blocking tight end to lay out the Middle linebacker

We need a FIREPLUG of a full back at the point of attack-

We need a wide out, down field, taking the Corner back out of the play.

Right on Brother, AUTORANK-- think outside the box-- NO Fuck that-- build a new box. These are new times we need a new box entirely.

here, and I think there is going to be one, one way or another. It's up to the Republicans to get cloture, and the fact Harry Reid is still talking about a filibuster is a good thing, along with his statement of moral support by voting against cloture.

everyone has gotten used to a constant climate of cynical "strategery" and giving up before even trying because they know how it's gonna turn out.

Giving up your beliefs because that's what you think everyone else is doing is hypocritical-- and totally un-American. Cindy Sheehan went to sit in a ditch and kick started a movement. She said she thought she'd be there on her own and the first night 700 people showed up.

Bleeve. I'm even willing to bleeve in the potential for Repugs to have a (Constitutional, not homocidal) conscience.

Would that they were.

Lately I've been noticing a greater degree of arrogance within the RW nuts than ever before. Yes they've always been so but now the RW spinners don't even bother to defend their gross violations of the law or corporate favoritism. The media has become even more coopted.

The RW just says, "but we keep winning and you've got nothing." We all know the vote is no longer reflective of the will of the people and we know why. The fatalism of the opposition party is grueling to watch.

Well I don't really believe that * has 42% support. I feel it's truly way lower than 20%.

If Alito is in, rites of the individual are down the tubes and * is has absolute domestic impunity.

Bold maneuverings are required for sure. Will Pitt's idea of walking out of the SOTU was one of the best idea i heard of in ages. Hope it got some traction.

32. IF IF IF
IF it comes down to it-- and we do filibuster--- and we make our case on the floor of the Senate--- how many will come over to our side?

How many will start getting letters and calls and emails-- they are RIGHT -- stop ALito- I ve changed my mind.

HOw many will get the message from the speaches on the Senate FLoor?

Yes - it would be a miracle-- But it might happen-- so I want to try it.

SO Kerry has called for the ball-

-- I say GIVE THE DAMN BALL TO KERRY--

Hand Kerry the ball

We need a Tackle eligible-Ted Kennedy-to pull, and lay out the Defensive end,

We need a blocking tight end Chris Dodd-to lay out the Middle linebacker-

We need a FIREPLUG of a full back HArry "give 'em hell" Reid -at the point of attack-

We need a wide out,Russ Fiengold -down field, taking the Cornerback out of the play.

Kerrys got the ball, hes at the 10, the 15, Senator Boxer blocks Senator Frist, Kerry is at the 20

33. Alito's 'pass' of Reagan era REX84 plans for 'suspension of Constitution'
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 11:34 AM by EVDebs
Needs a thorough examination. During Reagan's sleepwalk through the presidency, many Executive Orders passed 'constitutionality' reviews by Alito's DOJ/Office of Legal Counsel to the White House. Alito most likely reviewed, and allowed passage, of the planning for 'suspension of the Constitution' from which we learned only during Ollie North's Iran/Contra testimony.

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/pages/fema.html

'Readiness Exercise 84' is another description of this plan I've heard given.

""Oliver North enters the story here. From 1982 to 1984, North was assigned by National Security Advisor and fellow Iran-Contra conspirator Robert McFarlane to work on the EMPB. Former General Louis Giuffrida was at EMPB as well. According to Covert Action Quarterly, "By forming the Emergency Mobilization Preparedness Board, Ronald Reagan made it possible for a small group of people, under the authority of the NSC, to wield enormous power. They, in turn, used this executive authority to change civil defense planning into a military/police version" of domestic control. While at EMPB, North revised contingency plans for dealing with nuclear war, domestic insurrection and massive military mobilization.

Giuffrida and North worked to refine and implement Operation GARDEN PLOT, a plan to suspend the Constitution in the event of a national crisis, such as widespread internal opposition to a U.S. military invasion abroad. GARDEN PLOT was actually implemented during LA's Rodney King Riots in the form of street curfews as well as in recent anti-globalization protests.

In 1983, at the annual meeting of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, FEMA's General Frank S. Salcedo recommended expanding FEMA's power even further. As he saw it at least 100,000 U.S. citizens, from survivalists to tax protesters, were serious threats to civil security. Salcedo saw FEMA's new frontier as the protection of industrial and government leaders from assassination, and the protection of civil and military installations from sabotage or attack. Notable for stations such as this one, Salcedo warned against dissident groups gaining access to U.S. opinion or a global audience in times of crisis. FEMA and the Department of Defense began a continuing tradition of biannual joint exercises to test civilian mobilization, civil security emergency and counterterrorism plans. The Rex-84 Alpha Explan (Readiness Exercise 1984, Exercise Plan) showed that FEMA lead 34 other federal agencies, including CIA, FBI, and U.S. Treasury, in a massive civil readiness exercise. It was conducted in coordination with "Night Train 84," a worldwide military command post exercise, based on multi-emergency scenarios operating both abroad and at home. The exercises envisioned that the previously mentioned 100,000 U.S. citizens, labeled "national security threats" would be rounded up and thrown into concentration camps.""

http://www.nogw.com/articles/fearing_fema.html

Currently, it appears that the reorganization of DHS has now placed ICE - Immigration and Customs Enforecment, as the new 'intelligence' wing of the DHS and repositioning of the now inflammatory FEMA as lead agency for REX 84-style data gathering and 'enforcer' of the Executive Orders.

you don't vote for a filibuster. repeat after me, there is no such thing as a vote for a filibuster.
there is no such thing as a vote for a filibuster.
there is no such thing as a vote for a filibuster.
there is no such thing as a vote for a filibuster.
they have to come up with 60 votes against. (nuclear option is another issue. i understand. let's consider that separately for now)
so, senators that are against alito, but afraid of the filibuster, can just STAY AWAY!!! let a lobbyist take you on a golf trip, get the flu, pretend you care about your family, and go home for a few days.
let these bastards twist in the wind for a while. nurse your grudge. hold out for some pork. make them wheel and deal. wear a wire, and record their threats. even the few remaining halfway sane republicans can use some leverage on their leadership. i suggest that they are all feeling a little punk, and ought to get a little sleep.
keep this going until after sotu. make the whores include this footnote in their fawning, slobbering coverage of the lies. * delivers speech. dems still talking.

(just btw- if the filibuster is still going, what has to happen procedurally to allow the joint session to commence?????)

You're right, make it hurt. But here's the thing, when have the Democrats stood up and fought the Republicans? Exactly once, on social security. Full party unity, strict adherence to strategy, and it worked.

This time, we've got a public that's furious with *. It's the perfect time to stand and fight. As it becomes an issue, support will grow, we will prevail, not just get some pork.

The Republicans can go screw themselves if they think a Lindsay Graham coached witness can fool the American public.

44. Senator Reid, stand up and say something like this:
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 03:01 PM by bleever

"We didn't do this to break the government. We did this because the government is already broken, and it's broken because that's what the Republicans have been trying to do. Cut the minority completely out of the picture, disable the two party system, and let the 'tyranny of the majority' that our founding fathers feared take over. Disable the checks and balances of the three branches of government, first by gaining and holding controlling majorities in both houses of Congress by whatever means necessary, regardless of established ethics, and also by creating a Supreme Court that is reluctant to question the Executive branch. And finally, to change the historic rules of the Senate, the world's greatest deliberative body, so that by getting just a single vote over 50%, they can force a choice onto 100% of the American people.

"It is time to stand up to these anti-Constitutional tendencies and say, No. We believe in the wisdom of the Constitution, with its three equal branches of government, and will not let them be undone. To say, No, never before in American history has fear caused us to turn our back on the Constitution, and we will not let it be done now.

"President Bush has his opportunity to tell the American people what he sees as the state of our union. We want it to be clear to the American people that no man, no president, can use the threats that face America to say that we should weaken essential American liberties. Because anyone who believes that threats justify weakening our liberties, in the end only weakens America. If fact, America is strongest when it stays true to itself. To its liberties, to its founders' vision, and to its innate ability to withstand any attack or foe, without flinching."

47. Eloquent and patriotic...you belie your epigrammatic style;)
We now have the plot, from start to finish thanks to Frank Capra (who rarely missed).

We have the rationale.

And now, you've written an eloquent speech of real substance, and at the same time, filled with juicy sound bytes.

We've done our job, the DU "Imagine-eers," lets see our Senators rock the house!

67. It sure does. Our representatives need to sign a contract ... with us!
The contract should have sections included in all contracts signed by elected and appointed officials and specific language for each representative and appointee.

Wow, what a concept! Basics: uphold Constitution; proof they've read and studied it; promise to not show favors to those who contributed, not show favors to those who worked for them, not show favors for relatives, in laws, friends. Define favors, define process whereby any questions are asked immediately and answered on possible conflicts of interest. Specify penalties for those who break the rules - automatic 5 year jail sentence to start plus penalty for additional legal violation(s).

A comprehensive contract for leaders has a great precedent and track record. The Republic of Venice was amazingly prosperous, productive and FREE for over 600 years. This wonderful nation even thrived during the Middle Ages. The leaders of Venice, especially the Doge, had to sign such contracts. They were serious documents and people were held to them. The government of Venice was amazingly honest. The "most serene Republic" (Serenisima) was hated by the rest of Europe. They were a REPUBLIC, they had no inherited anything whatsoever, and they were so tolerant that a main function of their secret police was to watch the religious "intolerants" who tried to spread ignorance in their realm. In addition, the other European states resented how Venice handled "The Crusades." Venice traded and got along well with the Moslems, who were quite advanced at the time. They would land the Crusaders at a point that the Moslems always seemed to know. In addition, on the voyages, when the Venetian boats were well out to sea on the voyage, they would charge unbelievable prices for water and food, which the clod hoppers from France, England, Germany, etc. had to pay. The Republic of Venice should be our model.
