******What would Jimmy Stewart Do?******
I wrote this poem during the hearings. I'm hoping the Democratic senators rent "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" if they need some inspiration...

"WHAT WOULD JIMMY STEWART DO?"

I think my brain will turn to custard
If I watch one more day of this charade
Mr. Alito lies, Mrs. Alito cries
Either way, our democracy dies...

"I don't really think that Bork's a god
I said it just to get the job,"
"And I joined an uncivil alumni group
'Cause I didn't wanna be a party poop."

"I thought CAP was short for Phi Beta Kappa."
"Strip-searching is a way to build character."
"Um, doesn't a woman's right to choose,
Mean Manolo Blahnik or Ferragamo shoes?"
"Unitary power? No, no, no.
But once I'm a justice - Go man, go!"

Let's go 'round and 'round and 'round
You can't vote me down
If you can't pin me down...

Alito's lying, Bush is spying
Either way, our democracy's dying
With Kennedy's blarney and Biden's bluster
Isn't there some strength you can muster?
It's what the last stand was to Custer
(Jimmy Stewart would do it
He wouldn't get flustered)
Please guys, stand up and filibuster!

6. Yes, compared to W
If you don't think we'd be better off now with Reagan at the helm than W, you've already smoked far too much crack.

12. Jimmy Stewart was a true believer of republican values.
A couple of examples:

* He and Henry Fonda once got into a fistfight over politics when they were rooming together as young actors.

* He went to a dinner party hosted by Nancy and Ronald Reagan on the evening of John Kennedy's funeral (also in attendance John Wayne).

However, I think he would have disowned the republican party by now had he lived to see its degeneration and descent into Hell.

2. Well, I like it.
I'm ashamed to say that I've never actually gotten around to seeing the movie, but I guess I'd better.:)

8. Mr. Smith goes to washington was all hollywood. Not white horses with
men on them here. One long, hard, slog to go. All of us need to sacrifice to make it happen. To work together during elections ... even if we see some of the issues different. We need to focus on what we agree on: health care, no perpetual war, good governance.

10. It seems to me it used to be the case that as long as a person or party
could "hold" the floor, the filibuster could go on.

It doesn't seem to work that way anymore.

They allot time, and the majority party seems to be able to call a cloture vote whenever the heck they want to. Why should this be different than anything else that goes on in Congress, the Federal gov't these days?

I saw a show once that said that Jimmy Stewart's films changed in character after he'd been to war in WWII. The innocence that characterized his earlier work was transformed to a harder edge afterwards.
