Chafee Will Vote For Cloture
He hasn't said how he'll vote on confirmation. (I'd bet a lot that he votes against Alito) He has gone on record as saying he'll oppose any "stall tactics" of the democrats.

2. That's not surprising
I don't expect a filibuster to work, unfortunately, but it will at least show that the party still gives a damn. Sort of.

3. Time Was When I Had Some Respect For Moderate Republicans
There used to be a time when I had some respect and forbearance for moderate Republicans. These days I still give the very occasional sigh for the way things were in the past, but I now believe that even moderate Republicans like Chafee should be voted out of office.

18. That's exactly right.
And regardless how wrong I believe that to be that is exactly why they beat us consistently.

9. They may not be totally extinct but increasingly it does seem to be party

over doing what's right.

I may not care for everything Giuliano or (or Gov) Pataki do but on many social issues they're very moderate. Of course they're not in the Senate or Congress and any power they may hold is currently mostly within the state.

5. When is RI going to get rid of Chafee?
They obviously like him, but give me a break, he helps keep the balance of power in Repuke hands. They need to get a good Dem or liberal Indy in his Senate seat, asap. I just don't get why the good people of RI haven't figured this out already.

7. Then I hope all naive Dems
realize that no matter how moderate the moderate Republicans are, to hope they'll jump the fence is naive daydreaming. Time to face reality, and build a true majority in the house in 2006, even if storming the election locales and forcing them to hand count each and every vote is necessary.

8. Of course he will
Chaffee, Collins, Snowe, Specter..they talk the "moderate" game, but when the time comes to vote, they will back Fearless Leader every time.

10. Snowe and Chafee will vote for cloture on Monday
then vote against confirmation on Tuesday. The local media will tell us about their moderate positions and how brave they were to stand up to Resident Bush by voting against his nominee.

12. Some "moderate" Chafee is. Supports Lott, Frist, Alito etc.
Exactly WHEN and WHERE is Lincoln Chaffee a "moderate"? I think his constituents have been duped.

14. It grieves me to think of Lincoln Chafee as such a big pussy, but
there it is.

He's caved on just about everything and I hope Democrats in his state flood the polls this November to defeat him.

I'm not going to miss him much at all.

16. He works for the GOP and not the people who elected him
He's damn lucky to be in the Senate in the first place, Rhode Island is a very Democratic-leaning state. With a yes- Alito vote, Chafee's luck is going to run out in November.

You can't campaign on a pro-choice platform, and then turn around and vote yes for Alito.

17. I thought Roe v. Wade was an issue Chafee deeply cared about? Let's revue.
Shall we?:grr: Please RI, LOSE THIS HYPOCRITE. If Obama votes for cloture, I'm working my ass off AGAINST him....not that it will do any good because most people don't pay attention to this stuff.:(

<snip>
Several moderate Republicans have raised questions about Alito's perceived hostility to abortion rights. Senator Lincoln D. Chafee, Republican of Rhode Island, said yesterday that he would oppose a Supreme Court nominee who would overturn Roe v. Wade, though he acknowledged that senators are unlikely to learn for certain how Alito would vote.

''It's an issue that I care deeply about, and I know how high the emotions are," Chafee said in an interview in East Greenwich, R.I. ''I think that to pull this country apart on this issue at this time --it's not good for our country to wade into this debate right now, when the country is so polarized, with the high emotions associated with it."<snip>

19. Everyone should ask him "Why are you NOW pro-life?" when they call...
Because that is in effect what he's saying when he votes for cloture to his constituency! Call a spade a spade and don't let him sneak away!
