Tell All New Yorkers: DEMO SCHUMER'S OFFICE MONDAY NOON!
EMERGENCY DEMO FOR FILIBUSTER OF ALITO

This coming Monday, January 30 at 12 noon, there will be a demonstration at
the office of Senator Chuck Schumer, at 757 Third Ave., at East 47th Street,
to demand that Schumer stop ducking and take real action against the the
greatest threat facing women's rights and all civil rights--the confirmation
of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

We will demand that SCHUMER IMMEDIATELY JOIN THE EFFORT TO FILIBUSTER THE
CONFIRMATION OF ALITO!!! We will tell Schumer that he is NOT representing
the interests of his constituency if he does not filibuster. As Kim Gandy,
President of the National Organization for Women has said: A vote NO on
Alito without a filibuster is the same as a vote YES.

PLEASE SHOW UP IF YOU POSSIBLY CAN (NUMBERS COUNT!) AND PASS THE WORD TO
EVERYONE YOU KNOW. THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW--IF ALITO IS CONFIRMED WE WILL
FACE UNPRECEDENTED ATTACKS ON OUR RIGHTS FOR DECADES TO COME!!

This demonstration has been called by an ad hoc coalition of feminists
including: The Reproductive Choice Association, The Womens Mobilization
list-serve and individual members of NOW NYC.

1. Schumer is on board for the filibuster - why are you choosing right
now to nip at his heels? Can't you hold off until after this most pressing (due to the time line of the vote) is off the table before you bite the hand that is helping us?

Women's issues are very important, I agree. But, Schumer is on our side. What is the motivation for this ... to get him to withdraw his support for the filibuster?

2. Hillary is more of a concern than Schumer
I got an email from her a couple of days ago. She listed all her reasons for voting No on Alito, but said NOTHING about supporting a filibuster.

LAST WEEK I got emails from both Kerry and Kennedy saying they would support a filibuster.

Alito is a danger to ALL of our civil rights - Every American. The Constitution will mean nothing when Bush and his judges get though with it.

3. This is similar to an email I received from Democrats.com which said
Hilary was against a fillibuster and to call her immediately. Her office said it was Wrong information and that she would use any method to block Alito's confirmation.

6. Thanks
She should have made that perfectly clear in her email, though.

9. Strange, isn't it?
Why, it's almost ilke some people were committed to spreading misinformation about prominent Democrats and running them down for political gain.....who would beneift from that, I wonder.

7. I thought they might have mean DEMOralize - since he is already
voting WITH us. I don't get it. So much energy placed in the wrong place. That would be like a similar group here (in Massachusetts) picketing Kerry and Kennedy to get them to support this same effort. I don't get it. It can do nothing but embarrass the groups involved and piss Schumer off in the process.

Move along and protest someone that is NOT on board already? There's an idea, huh?

DEMOlish - that's a good one too!

8. Can someone please post proof that Schumer said he was supporting
a filibuster because as of last night 2 websites tracking the Senators' status re: filibuster support stated that Schumer was NOT on board.

10. Sure - here you go
Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 11:35 AM by Sydnie
http://www.democrats.com/alito-48

Currently, there are 13 supporting - UPDATED - 14 now

Boxer, Feinstein, Dodd, Dubin, Kerry, Kennedy, Sarbanes, Stabenow, Reid, Clinton, Schumer, Wden, and Feingold. Add Obama to that list. Just updated post his tv appearance this morning where he stated he would join the effort.

edited to add - what sites are you following? Perhaps we need to get the word to them to update their list. If you know anyone in those groups, you might want to tell them to hold off on the DEMO. They could lose a bit of credibility for protesting the wrong dude.

11. Okay...so it's good that he is responding to his base....and I do not
see it doing any harm to encourage Schumer and Hillary to go the distance on this. This can be a re-enforcement demonstration -- a visible manifestation of New Yorkers Supporting our Senators to Filibuster Alito.

14. If they want to make it a show of support, then they need to change
the word DEMAND out of that notice to something a bit more friendly, like SUPPORT. If you know how to contact them, it might be a good time to do so. They will need time to make new signs and write new speeches.
