Is this Dem Alito strategy: speak softly and deliver a sucker punch
When otherwise pro-GOP dems like Feinstein, Lieberman and Biden say they are going to support the filibuster, consistent critics of Bush like Barbara Boxer are being coy (when I called her office anyway), and one of the administration's toughest critics, Robert Byrd says he is actually going to support Alito, I see a possible pattern.

They may be planning to filibuster successfully without telegraphing the blow ahead of time.

Reasons for doing this:

  • reduce possibility of threats and bribes by GOP

  • reduce likely media distortion and pressure. They may have finally figured out that the corporate media isn't going to give them a fair hearing, so it's better to shine them on than show their cards and get screwed.

Any other possible arguments to support this interpretation of their actions as a strategy or arguments against?

The biggest argument against is the last five years of inaction by the Democrats.

But I'm open to reasons to be hopeful.

6. I hope so
I was just now thinking it has to be a rope a dope strategy, I just can't see senator Byrd acting like a whipped pup, not now, not after the impassioned inflamed speeches he's delivered.
I hope I'm right on this.

7. That's exactly what I've been thinking.
ENVISIONING it...

I don't think it was any accident that Byrd talked about mine safety minutes before debate ensued. Do you really think he didn't know Alito's track record on this issue?

It will be dramatic when he announces that he is changing his vote and why. And guess what else? MMM will have to SHOW IT!!!! Byrd KNOWS his politics.

He talked about lobbying. He talked about letters long-hand on lined paper. He was saying, "Make me vote against Alito," and we are rising to the challenge.

Biden: I'll vote ONCE against cloture. Did he say ONLY once? I don't think so.

So they say the filibuster is doomed to fail (keep those right-wing outcries at a minimum until...)

BAM

the filibuster SUCCEEDS

Or...I could be just wishing.

ENVISION IT

11. sucker punch
We shouldn't be defeatest and keep the pressure on with emails and calls, but if you get your hopes too high that a filibuster is going to happen then you will be the one that is sucker punched.

12. I read yesterday that Obama is not for a fillibuster
So, maybe you're right about the sucker punch theory; goodness knows, I'm hoping that's the case.

I surely do need something to restore my faith in the democratic party.

16. I'm still holding out hope...
Harry Reid is formidable opponent. Too many things about the statements on the part of the Democrats in the last week don't add up. I think by their actions that the Republicans are a bit nervous. Things could still blow up.
