Huge shock here. :eyes: But we stress this last point: in the Senate debate on this confirmation, Democrats should focus on Alito's judicial philosophy, and discard the personal attacks that figure so prominently in some of the interest-group campaigning against his confirmation. Such attacks at best distract from the principled case against Alito; at worst, they undermine it.
For the same reason and others, we do not think Senate Democrats should try to filibuster this confirmation. A filibuster is certain to fail; indeed, the Senate is certain to respond to a filibuster by outlawing them permanently in judicial confirmations. Using this weapon now would stake Democrats to the implausible argument that Alito's inevitable confirmation is the most egregious act of the Bush administration and the Republican Senate, going into a critical midterm election. http://www.dlc.org/ndol_ci.cfm?kaid=131&subid=192&contentid=253692

that the group most responsible for the Dems utter irrelevancy in national politics today would support something that 90% of the rank & file oppose.
These people need to be relegated back to the fringe where they belong. If the Dems ever ant to regain their relevancy- much less majority status again.

6. Yes this don't fight back crap is getting ridiculous. |
|
So the Senate outlaws filibuster (as if, I really doubt that will happen) then when we are once again the majority, we can bring it back.
The important thing here is to stand up and fight back. It isn't just about winning.

have both received either primary challenges or the threat of same. I suspect that those changed their minds. You might also check the affiliations of those Dems who are voting for cloture.
No. If Al From had changed his mind (sacre bleu!) the site would reflect it, I'm quite sure.

only if they think the filibuster can prevail.
And it's unlike me to say much, if anything, negative about the DLC.

No one has mentioned how long a filibuster would last.
How often can they vote to end debate?
How long are Democrats willing to hold up Senate business.
Just starting a filibuster doesn't stop confirmation, it's just the beginning. It has to be maintained until the Repubs give up.
If we stall the senate for 6 weeks, then still cave, it will be an even bigger loss for us.

Sorry it's long but I am pissed. I am so sick of these wimpy DLC'ers that I can't take it any more. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exactly who do you think you are representing? I cannot believe that you would suggest that any groups of concerned citizens are attacking Mr. Alito personally. We, as Democrats, are attacking him for the radical right wing agenda that he supports. He will be one of the most disruptive judges ever to sit on the Bench because, he will rubber stamp anything this administration wants, including the dilution or removal of our civil liberties. There is not a Democrat that I know who doesn't realize that the confirmation of Alito is a high certainty but when are we going to stand up for what this Party represents. When are we going to be the opposition Party? When are we going to fight for what is right?
It is time for the Democratic "leadership" to fight for what we, the Democratic grassroots, want and that is to stand up to these tyrants and to stop worrying about your own re-election. The answer is not what the DLC purports...everyone has to go to the center; it's the only way to win. Bull#%*! It is to remain true to the humanity of the Party, the equality, the compassion for the poor and sick and helpless, striving for world peace, protecting our environment, and not a chase for oil or power. The Democratic Party is not losing voters because it is not centrist enough; it is losing voters because it is becoming too centrist. You are not going to change the minds of the conservative middle but you are losing the true Democrat who now chooses not to vote or who votes for a third party. Your thought that we will follow you anywhere because we would never vote for a Republican is half right. I won't vote for a Republican but I will vote for a third party candidate who represents my views.
Now before you toss me off as a radical lefty (which I proudly am), let me tell you. I have been a Party activist since I was 18 and I am now 54. I have been a Democratic club president, a precinct captain, and a campaign worker. I know a Republican when I see one and you, the DLC, represents nothing to me but Republican Lite.
Understand this; the grassroots movement to bring about this Filibuster is as much about seeing if you and the rest of the Party leaders have the guts to stand up for once to this corrupt administration as it is trying to protect this country from Alito’s ideology. If you do not fight, we will take this Party back and make it what it should be and once was before you wimps got in control.
I just wish you would fight the Republicans as hard as you fight your fellow Democrats. Then you might accomplish something.
