1. Saw it this morning! The WHOLE thing. He was wrong.
He should have been supportive of the efforts and wasn't.

The repukes pocket filibustered 61 of Clinton's nominees. That's all Obama needs to know.

3. Yes, saw it too, he said Alito was going to be confirmed
How about Dems holding their cards close to their vest and not telegraphing defeat before the vote?

9. I think he's almost as bad as Landrieu
it's ok for now because he's still learning the ropes, and the DLC is often the place to turn to for new senators (Salazar).

2. we get precious few moments in the MSM to tell our story
Does Obama believe Alito should be on the SCOTUS or not? If not, then spend every minute trying to make sure he is not, and explaining why.

Period.

10. He squandered a golden opportunity , IMO!
Instead of telling the viewers how the Democrats have "dropped the ball" perhaps he should have taken this opportunity to educate the public as to why the Democrats are considering a filibuster! Nothing like reminding John Q. Public that the filibuster isn't an exclusively Democrat "thing"! How soon they forget that Clinton's nominee for Surgeon General was filabustered!

Geez..........

I call it "Wet Blanket Syndrome"...

Peace.

5. Said one way to guarantee SC judges reflect our values is to win elections
Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 07:57 PM by Wordie
Not a horribly negative comment, imho. I can't do video on my ancient computer, so I'd appreciate if somebody could answer a few questions I have, that I've mentioned below:

Here is what the ABC article says:

To more effectively oppose Supreme Court nominees in the future, Democrats need to convince the public "their values are at stake" rather than use stalling tactics to try to thwart the president, said a senator who opposes Samuel Alito's confirmation.

Did Obama actually use the words, "stalling tactics," or is that some subtle editorializing by the author of the article? I didn't see it.

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., predicted on Sunday that an effort to try to block a final vote on Alito would fail on Monday. That would clear the way for Senate approval Tuesday of the federal appeals court judge picked to succeed the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Is that SO terrible? Just that he doesn't think it will work? So terrible that we have spent half the day debating it, instead of spending our time emailing/FAXing our Senators?

And also there was this:

Obama cast Alito as a judge "who is contrary to core American values, not just liberal values."

But Obama joined some Democrats, including Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Charles Schumer of New York, in expressing his unhappiness with the filibuster bid.

"There's one way to guarantee that the judges who are appointed to the Supreme Court are judges that reflect our values. And that's to win elections," Obama said.

I wish he had more faith in the effort, and that he used the msm opportunity to say so. But he is saying clearly that Alito does not reflect core American values. And that he's going to vote against Alito's confirmation and support the filibuster. That's good enough for me! Now let's get back to our letters...

Sen. Obama Criticizes Filibuster Tactic

(Excerpt)

WASHINGTON -- To more effectively oppose Supreme Court nominees in the future, Democrats need to convince the public "their values are at stake" rather than use stalling tactics to try to thwart the president, said a senator who opposes Samuel Alito's confirmation.

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., predicted on Sunday that an effort to try to block a final vote on Alito would fail on Monday. That would clear the way for Senate approval Tuesday of the federal appeals court judge picked to succeed the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Democrats fear he would shift the court rightward on abortion rights, affirmative action, the death penalty and other issues.

"We need to recognize, because Judge Alito will be confirmed, that, if we're going to oppose a nominee that we've got to persuade the American people that, in fact, their values are at stake," Obama said.

"There is an over-reliance on the part of Democrats for procedural maneuvers," he told ABC's "This Week."

(clip/snip)

Obama cast Alito as a judge "who is contrary to core American values, not just liberal values."

But Obama joined some Democrats, including Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Charles Schumer of New York, in expressing his unhappiness with the filibuster bid.

"There's one way to guarantee that the judges who are appointed to the Supreme Court are judges that reflect our values. And that's to win elections," Obama said.

Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., said he, too, would support the filibuster attempt but agreed that it was not particularly wise.

"I think a filibuster make sense when you have a prospect of actually succeeding," Biden said on CNN's "Late Edition." "I will vote one time to say to continue the debate. but the truth of the matter" is that Alito will be confirmed, he said.

6. I watched him
and was extremely unhappy. Every station had republicans, noone tlaking about alito. Obama had the only 5 minutes available to a democrat at that momenbt, and he chose to criticize from within. today. the day we all need to be together! elections. we won 2000. we won 2004. that is not the way to get decent judges in place. remember who put bush in office? the supreme court..... we know florida was for gore by at least 20,000 votes if not more....

7. I don't know, I got more the idea that he was saying
he wished that wasn't the only alternative to stop him, but since the Dems are in the minority procedure is all there is and that it's fairly futile...

14. We don;t need Hamlet. We need fighters.
Fuck it, the Democrats should be concentratinbg on doing everything possible to block, stall or at least contest this as much as humanly possible.

Duh maybe if Democrats actually took some stands, it would be obvious that "our values are at stake" and that our side intends to defend them to the max.

Don;t waste precious time on national media with soul searching ambiguity right now
