Thoughts on Impeachment from a Katrina Survivor
On a very personal level, I have a genuine thirst to see Bush impeached. New Orlean's fate was only mentioned in passing during the midterms. That was appropriate, but it had damned well better be a centerpiece of the ’08 debates. And, if it plays a part in the condemnation and eventual impeachment of that ‘gitar-pickin’ teller of goat-tales and other lies, I’ll be sending dozens of roses to the graves of many a New Orleanian.

Now is not the time for impeachment. For a second, try and forget a couple of things. Most importantly, forget that impeachment of that scumball would be a resounding affirmation, a potent re-assertion of the values and beliefs put forth in our Constitution. That’s HARD to set aside. I think many of us feel driven to remind ourselves and our global neighbors, we are NOT a people that support torture. We are NOT a people that rush willy-nilly into a war of choice. We are NOT a people with a wish to be the biggest bully on the school yard. Impeaching Bush might make a step towards re-affirming those truths, but this is not the time for it (yet).

Also, forget about the potential for success or failure in impeachment. That should not be the single most important deciding factor in whether or not to pursue impeachment. There may come a time when pursuing impeachment, even if it has a snowball’s chance in hell, may be an inescapable moral imperative. Now just isn’t the time.

Why not, dammit? I REALLY want to see smirk-boy trying to stare down the smirk of a german shepherd in Abu Ghraib. Or, hell, being required to complete his tour of duty in the National Guard. So, why not now?

Other things take higher priority. Some examples:

1) Get our troops out of Iraq.
2) Make sure the troops remaining have freaking body armor.
3) If possible, establish a wider coalition to help maintain some semblance of peace in the
region.
4) Insist on following the recommendations of the 9/11 committee.
5) Breathe life back into habeas corpus?
6) Put the smack down and question the constitutionality of shrubbies signing statements.
7) Just for fun, ask why one of the FBI’s top 10 wanted, a Cuban terrorist, was photographed
behind Shrub back in 2000 (if memory serves correctly)
8) Investigate:

a) No bid contracts
b) Torture
c) Silencing of scientific results relating to global warming, gm foods, “safe” levels of
mercury in water, and WHY THE FUCK THE GOVERNMENT WON’T LET PRIVATE CATTLE FARMERS TEST
THEIR OWN CATTLE FOR MAD COW DISEASE.
d) Price gouging by oil corporations
e) Protectionism of big pharmacological corps….hey, why can’t I get my meds from Canada?
f) Why the bones of 9/11 victims are still being found 5 years later
g) Why corpses are still being found in New Orleans 1 year later
h) Why the supposed vice president of the United States believes he is above the power of
subpoena?

When the sheer magnitude of atrocities committed over the past 6 years hits me, I almost think impeachment is too easy. These bastards need to have their sniffers shoved into the big piles of shit they’ve left behind. Impeachment, when it comes, ought to be like putting a dog out of its misery.

very bitter,
very frustrated,

1. Think of impeachment as a slowly falling snowflake.
It's coming down, but we have to wait and some people don't even see it yet.

2. Ignoring criminals is criminal
Anyone who suggests we turn a blind eye or give a free pass to a criminal is a criminal.

In the course of setting things right, many things will be uncovered. Those things need to be used to prosecute, impeach and imprison. Period.

It's all part of the work that needs done.

3. Absolutely
Its a little something that we here in America call Justice. Not payback. Simply Justice. We need to get back to setting the right example.

7. Just to clarify
I'm not suggesting turning a blind eye to anything. From a damage control perspective, my thoughts are to the troops first, the constitution next, everything else comes in time with patience and perseverance.

8. I think impeachable events will show themselves
When all the work on what you are talking about comes to pass.

Once there is clear evidence, we need to move on it.

I don't buy this BS about it causing Congress to grind to a halt! That's what happened during Clinton's impeachment, but that's because it took ALL of their efforts to attempt to scrape something together. That's not the case here.

In the meantime, there are other priorities to address.

9. Excellent. I'd like to add one to your list, if I may.
Provide medical aid to all who were exposed to the toxic aftermath of 9/11. The pResident can't stand with them for a photo-op (after finally emerging from his hidey-hole) and then ignore them. The first-responders, the area residents, and the clean-up workers all need medical help.

10. Bush and the Congress need to be held accountable for their failure
to aid the victims of Katrina. They cannot be given a pass. The people are still suffering. I know they are there, the media doesn't have to show them to me but they should.

If those who filed so-called false claims could be caught and even prosecuted then by God we also have the capability to investigate who in all branches of our government failed these Americans and bring them to justice too.

Our representatives can end this war, investigate Bush, impeach him, investigate Katrina, end Homeland Security, establish a budget, reverse the tax cuts, restore budget cuts and raise the income limits on social security contributions all at the same time.

11. I would like to add
a question as to why they only spent about 12 hours 'investigating' Abu Gharib and over 100 times that many hours 'investigating' Clinton. And they talk about OUR priorities?????

12. The way I hope it plays out is that he gets the drip-drip-drip treatment.
Hearings on every transgression against the American people; when those who haven't been following along hear what's been happening in that neocon circle, it'll be clear to everyone that he needs to be booted out.
