I was watching Hardball a little bit ago and just had to write something, so here it is..... KJ
Dear Mr. Matthews: A little bit ago, you were speaking with someone from Time Magazine and you asked something to the effect of: If we are going to get out eventually, why not get out now? Your rationale is something along the lines that we are wasting American lives by staying one moment longer if we're planing on getting out anyway. Two thoughts for you: (1) Why didn't you adopted this line of questioning until the democratic party took over? When the republicans had the two houses of Congress, waging war in Iraq was noble and the right thing (fighting them there so we don't fight them here). Obviously we weren't staying there forever (barring the disavowed permanent military bases), but the President said getting out of Iraq was going to be another president's problem. So why are you adopting this indignance now, that we must leave immediately? If one day is too long now, then a month was too long three weeks ago. Yet where was your dismay then? Your self-righteous anger? (2) The REASON that we don't just leave tomorrow, as much as I wish we could, is that American armies barged into this country and waged war on Iraq and its citizens for three years. Our leaders directed death for tens of thousands and destroyed entire cities. Our leaders played war games like children with G.I. Joe figures while our troops and Iraqis died by the thousands. And now, you suggest we just turn our backs on the destruction we've caused, no apologies, just wipe our hands clean of the blood and sand and walk away. The REASON we don't leave tomorrow is because the adults are in charge now, and we'll act like the responsible nation that we've been in the past. We'll try to earn back some small piece of the respect we once had and do the right thing by extending just a small portion of our wealth and compassion to cities that we decimated, families that we destroyed, life that we took. We'll apologize for the children we left at the helm and offer our respect and humility in the hopes that the rest of the world will forgive us for falling asleep at the wheel and letting such tragedy to occur. The REASON we don't leave tomorrow is because it is OUR mess, and we have to clean it up. My five year old could tell you this. Please get out of your funk and do you job as a journalist, or make room for someone who will. A lot of questions are going to be asked by the newly empowered party, and you can be a part of it, or you can obstruct it. Thanks, Keith
