How does someone that nutty get elected in a state like PA? Sure, every state has a bunch of dipshits the rest of us have to deal with, but Santorum was waaaaay to right wing for PA. Was his Dem opponent weak? Did Santorum pretend to be sensible before was was elected? Wikipedia didn't have much about his election in 1994.

5. Also, Americans aren't being careful with their future. They're more careful now.

4. He went after his opponent with Rovian tactics I think
I wasn't paying as much attention back then. But I believe he ran a really dirty campaign that was a forerunner of what we see now.

7. Senator Heinz was killed in a plane crash. Harris Wofford appointed.
Santorum was part of the "we'll clean up DC":puke: class of 1994 after the Dem scandals. He pretended to be a moderate. Became increasingly zealous as the years went on but pulled back to moderate in election year. This year, the people of PA didn't forget who he really was at election time.

Good riddance.

10. He didn't have a record for anyone to run against, and it was 1994
Then he was re-elected to a second term in 2000, just before the Bush era began. His undoing was being an unabashed right-winger in a blue state during a time that Bush became increasingly unpopular there. He defended Bush's policies to the bitter end, which was his undoing. His strident attack on gay rights in recent years didn't help him much either.

11. And let's not forget Schiavo, the residency/cyberschool issue
and the idiotic book her wrote.

His own extremist words and hypocritical actions doomed him in the end.
