If not Alito it will be some right winger.

Lets say by some miracle Alito does not get confirmed. Bush will just keep putting up more right wing freaks till one gets confirmed.

I hate having the Supreme Court stacked so heavily to the right 7-2 by Presidential appointment, I know the right-wingers don’t say so but it is true.

The GOP has convinced the right to life crowd that Roe v. Wade will be overturned. If it isn’t struck down they certainly will be disfranchised.

If it is struck down I cannot wait till someone in the ‘Pro-Life’ crowd wants to get birth control of any kind especially if they are single.

I hate to endure the suffering that Bush, Inc voters have and will thrust upon us but they too will feel the sting. Sadly it seems the only way people will stop voting against their own best interest is when it slaps them in the face so hard they can not help but notice.

he will just nominate someone even worse.

5. If we defeat Alito
He can appoint a ham sandwich and STILL LOSE!

Don't put the cart before the appointment.

Bush can appoint one of the Clinton filibustered nominee's to get someone on the court. Win Win for everyone! :hippie:  :loveya: :grouphug: :pals: :headbang: :dilemma: :patriot:

2. We can do this EACH and EVERY time there is a nominee.
We do NOT have to let Bush have a Supreme Court nominee any time in his term... If he wants to fill the slot, he has to pick a known moderate. PERIOD.

17. I agree totally
We fight each day, especially until the mid term elections. I understand the defeatist talk cuz sometimes I feel the same way, but it soon passes and I'm always glad I kept it to myself cuz it doesn't do anything positive for our cause.

I look at this Alito nomination like flipping coins. No matter how often you role heads, the next time is still a 50:50 chance of rolling heads. We defeat Alito and the next nomination, we still have a 50:50 change of defeating him/her if he sucks.

7. Not if we get the truth out
If our Dems would stand up against Alito and make it clear that we won't tolerate a right winger on the bench, Bush will have to appoint someone sensible eventually. I still think we need a little more attention on some of his most outrageous opinions; like denying that being rammed with a broom stick is harrassment or shooting 8th grade purse snatchers is acceptable police procedure or overturning Roe means women going in front of abortion boards.

8. I Disagree--It Could Change Everything
Remember how the Repukes turned tail and ran when Harry Reid shut the place down? I think we can face them down with a filibuster. I don't even think they'll have the guts to go nuclear. After all, elections are coming up and this will expose them for who they are to the public. This is something they can't chance, as more and more people will see them for what they are. It's my opinion that they are cowards!!

11. Disagree that we will get someone like Alito again, Bush would
think twice about nominating and extremist again if Alito is defeated. Its to risky and he is becoming a real lame duck. I can deal with a moderate like Sandra Day O'Connor. I would expect a real President and leader to try and pick a candidate that is at least acceptable to all Americans.

12. Totally disagree.
Bush lost on Miers and was laughed at. If he loses on Alito, the smell of loser is all over him. He will then find a consensus candidate, still right wing, but not a nut like Alito, that the Democrats can support.

15. Sure Bush could put up an even more vile Nominee...
but his party is splitting on the NSA investigation. The investigation of the Valerie Plame Leak is still in progress... and the reports on Hurricane Katrina are still rising to the surface. Let's not forget about the Abrahmoff Scandal and those he has yet to finger and Bush's ever plummeting approval ratings. This Whitehouse has to come out unscathed and make record breaking bumps in the polls to get even a dog catcher appointed, and if Alito doesn't get confirmed, the GOP will have to think about their electablilty before rubber stamping the next nominee. I don't see this as being a constant situation for the Democrats to endure.

16. if he could have found someone worse than Alito
he would have nominated him before Alito.

And if there was someone worse out there who had a chance at being confirmed, and Bush passed him over, then the right wing wouldn't have let him pick Alito.

18. Of the 100 or so potential Republican nominees, 95 would be better than
Alito. It is unlikely that they would pick someone as bad if Alito went down.

22. Are you kidding me? Have you heard of Janice Rogers Brown?
She is black, female and anti-choice. After the food fight
over ALito she will slip through easily just like Scalia
did after Bork was filibustered.

21. We filibustered Bork successfully, but then Scalia was nominated in his
place and slipped through easily. I am afraid similar history
awaits us.

Until our side wins majority in senate, we are screwed until 2008.
I am confident a democrat will be inaugurated in Jan 2009. And Alito
will be just a faded bad dream.

but you are right, Bork was more extreme.

he lost outright 58-42.
