more debate on impeachment vs not impeachment
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 09:52 AM by tomp
antifascist posted what i thought was an excellent list of reasons for impeachment on the following thread and i thought it deserved a little more attention:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2657058&mesg_id=2657058

(edited to add list)

1. Bringing the corruption to light so that it doesn't happen again.
2. Making it clear that it is imperative for the Executive Branch to obey the laws.
3. Bringing back worldwide respect to the US.
4. Helping to end the war by exposing the profiteering behind it.
5. If the majority of the senate votes against impeachment, when criminality is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, it will make them look very bad.

i would like to see specific rebuttals of the list. any takers?

(for the record, my #1 priority for dems is: learning the lessons of the past and ensuring that the american people have learned them)

1. Re-establishing the rule of law
THE PRESIDENT BROKE THE LAW. PERIOD.

Let's set the record straight about this "fighting a war means the President can assume dictatorial powers" nonsense...

7. If you'd said anything that
hasn't been said a hundred times over the past couple of days, I wouldn't have made my comment. You didn't.

8. nothing new? disagree.
a point by point rebuttal of a good summation could help move the discussion forward, in my view.

obviously, you think the way forward is catty bullshit aimed at closing off discussion. if you're tired of the debate stay off the treads.

4. investigate first
open up hearings to get full accountability of what has happened in iraq.

we can not just go out and attempt to impeach. cheney and bush were careful not to be under oath when answering questions of congress.

i would rather get everything out in the open like the watergate hearings did, force bush and cheney to resign in disgrace rather than impeach. remember the impeachment process of nixon was only in committee when he resigned, but there had been investigations for a very long time before hand.

5. We can do all that without impeachment. Impeachment will reinforce
the polarization that we just overcame. We desperately need to get busy undoing the damage. I was 1000% for impeachment until morning after the election. Remember, revenge is one of "their" priorities, not ours. Don't misunderstand, I am totally for justice but we have priorities. Undo the Constitutional violations and STOP SENDING OUR LOVED ONES TO DIE. I would hope that Bush/Cheney will go to civil trial for breaking laws.
peace and long live democracy
