I was recruited by West Point in '76 to join their first co-ed class. Had I gone, I'd probably be typing this from the brig, if not right now. Not exactly a regret, but I do wonder sometimes how that carreer path would have turned out.

Were you a fan of Mary's down the hill? I liked Naxos. Great greek food. Small town though.

Don't know GI Judy. Was she a DDR/USSR soldier? We got 3 day passes if we could take a pic of the female border guard. They called her the border bitch...no accusations of misogyny, that's just what they called her.

49. GI Judy ran the Hole in the Wall tavern down town.
She was the first German citizen I talked to, the first night I went off post. Everyone told me that her bar was THE spot to check out. I went to town in a cab wondering how I would communicate with the locals. I sat down at the bar and she came over and said, "What will you have tonight Mothe? F????R?" From then on the ice was broken. I saw "Big Judy" clean house in there a time or two. I had a healthy respect for that old gal!

I loved that place, but I lived off post after a couple of months over there. It was like an 8 to 5 job for me, except for alerts and border patrols. I'd love to go back now that the border in open.

I was a PLL clerk in a mech infantry unit (1/315th - 79th ARCOM) who never went to an AIT but received OJT. I re-enlisted, got a 71G MOS and served in the 361st EVAC and the 348th General hospitals. Props to all of y'all combat arms types, especially Cav. As Martin Lawrence might say, "Y'all so crazy!"

Edited to add: Of course this was back when the reserves were just that -- reserves!

My biggest challenge, never having had the 'pleasure' of seeing Viet Nam, was complying with this:

"Sweeprs, sweepers. Start your brooms. Give the ship a clean sweep down fore and aft. Sweep all lower decks, ladders and passageways. Sweepers. Start your brooms."

As I got a little rank and seniority, I was able to make that announcement rather than compy with it.

Thanks to ALL vets.

And reach out a hand to those homeless vets still tromping the streets in their 60s and 70s ..... thirty five and forty years hence. As country, we really have a propensity to fuck things up and fuck people opver.

BTW-matcom was a tanker a D.A.T.

First training mission we went airborne and hit into a 10 foot hole in the ground. By the time I woke up from what was surely a concussion the BC was out arguing with an observer about who killed who (vs. a 2LT) the driver was screaming about the water coming into his hatch and I looked down and saw that my sinuses had just emptied into my lap.

Ah the Bradley. I staked out the "Hell hole" as my personal sleeping area luckily only one time did we even have anyone in the back so there wasn't much competition for it.

Served seven years in the creative group of the ad agency that orignated the "Be All You Can Be" campaign. Promoted from secretary to copywriter. Wrote ads about the College Fund, the Delayed Entry progam, and lots of MOSs. Visited Forts Lewis and Campbell. Of course, there was a good ad slogan (now it's "Army Strong"????) and a stable commander-in-chief back then!

P3 Orions and Combat Camera Group, proudest moment, serving with the Fleet Marine Expeditionary Forces in Beirut in "83". Thanks to all the grunts over there who sent my sailor ass back in one piece! Happy Birthday Marines, Semper Fi!

Thought I would share a collection of poems that all combat veterans can relate to, these words are not mine, however I am sure they convey many shared feelings. Enjoy!

The following is from a corpsman ("Doc") in Beirut who wishes to remain anonymous:

Jeff,
I was thinking...The way Ive learned to deal with Beruit is through my poetry. I've been told by friends that I should get them published, however the poems are my pain on paper... things I couldn't share with strangers. Now as I sit thinking about it all, I think Id like to share it with my brothers who were there. Is there a place on your board for this type of expression?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For Gods sake____
Let us sit upon the grass
and tell sad storys,
about the death
of brave young kings.

For they shall never reign____
Eyes forever closed...
Inside caskets rusted shut.
Their only life__
is our remembrance.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coming Home
Change will come,
Change is here.
Love fades out,
Then reappears.
Now my water has turned
to wine and these
thoughts I have I now claim
as mine..
I'm coming home.

Change has been,
change will be,
time will tell,
Then time will ease.

My curtain has been drawn
and my heart can go to where
my heart does belong
I'm going home.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And I will have to be braver now,
than I have ever been.
And I will have to be stronger now,
Than I ever was before.
And I will have to be more loyal now,
Than I have ever been.

A warriors heart will never change...
Only its direction..
Only its focus.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I could see the man
I was yet to become..
And the man that was not to be..

But only with the eyes
of the man who
is.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some things are better
left unsaid,

But they turn me inside
out,
And I can barely speak
of them,
Their only recourse,
Is to visit me...While I sleep.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd give anything to silence those sounds...
the crying out,
the screams,
the choppers,
I hear it as if its happening
now..

Today I woke to the sound of a chopper in flight__
and I was back,
in Beruit again.
All the sounds mixed in...
Then I heard a man crying for his mother
and I started my day
sobbing.

I wonder if he ever made it home to his mother.
I sometimes wonder if anybody got home..
Anybody?
Am I alone?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I saw J.P today hitchhiking...
(Like he ever would have!)
(was he going home?)
Yet there he was, for a fraction of a second..
(asking?)
No smile, no frown, no recognition..
no eye contact.
(like a stranger, which he was)
I wonder if he knew I did all I could?
(I wonder if I did?)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was like a god...
I could do anything.
I could keep a man alive...
(Or so I thought.)
I was the corpsman...
I had to.
And now...
What compares?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The only ones for who the war is over,
are those who died fighting it.
For the rest of us it will always be,
just a nightmare away.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A man should live everyday,
as if it were a preflight check.
He has to ask himself every morning
"am I ready for liftoff?"
And if not...
Find the strength to go
anyway.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How can another know...?
The storys, untold by me?
How could another understand...?
The chaos? The terror?
The destruction of ourselves?
I should not have had to be there.
I should not be the one to explain...
I am the one who is owed an explaination...
And that will never happen.

It is with great pleasure, that I retire my distress flag gif

And with great pride, hoist my new flag in honor of our new direction

173. Yes I did, that was the first of several schools in "P" Cola......
Yes, those are some touching poems, I stumbled across them when I was searching for some information about the Beirut Memorial page I had heard about.

They have changed the name and format of the Photo "A" School, it used to be called the Naval Schools of Photography. Imagine my surprise when I took my wife there for a vacation one time several years ago, it had the "DOD Schools of Photography" on it. My how things change in a few short 25 years or so! I also attended Naval Aircrewman Candidate School Class # 8133, as well as a few others specialty schools. It was my favorite base, I always looked forward to going back there and jumped at any chance to do so.

179. It was an old RA-5C "Vigilante" I was there when they brought it in!
I was at "A" school in "78", it was still leaking hydraulic fluid. You should take a trip back to the base. Fort Barrancus is now open for tours, it was boarded up when I was there, the old light house has been restored, you can go through the survival school museum, and the Aviation Museum is Huge, they have added on to it. Plan on spending a day at the museum alone. When I took my wife to the museum she wanted to see a P3C Orion, my old plane. I didn't think they would have one there, made me feel old when we walked out back and saw a P3A Orion. If you go on tuesdays, you can go over and watch the blue angels practice in the morning. Oh, and Trader Vic's is closed, what a shame, and I am not sure but Seville Quarters was still open the last time I was there about five or six years ago. I bought my wife a flaming hurricane, had to help her to the car and into the hotel room, I didn't bother to warn her about the deceiving potency. Man, to go back in time, well I could go on forever. I do highly recommend a trip back, its a great vacation spot for the spouse, while you get to take a trip down memory lane.

114. I will fly my flag today.
On this Veteran's Day, when we have hope at last for the America we dream of to become reality, I'll fly my flag for those who can't post here because they paid the ultimate price for freedom, and for those who came home in body but not in spirit.

For the families like my friend's friend, who is afraid her son died in this mess for nothing.

Even for my freeper ex-husband, who thinks * is the best thing on earth, because he was a good man who served his country but lost his way.

For my Dad who served in Korea. For my cousin Tanya who served in the first Gulf War but lost her life here at home.

For all my brothers and sisters past and present who stepped up when duty called.

I salute you.

As I've said many times before here, I never did anything particularly interesting and never suffered an injury worse than a paper cut.
I entered the Army in January of my junior high school year (graduated GED) and went on leave to attend my Senior Prom. I showed up in my Class "A" uniform and got to dance the final dance of the night with a girl I'd had a HUGE crush on since eighth grade.
I believe to this day that spending the time at forts Knox, Gordon and Monroe still did a lot more for me than spending the same time at Arthur Hill High School.

161. now, I don't know which branch you were in, happy, but I remember who told Navy jokes A LOT...
On the other hand, hardly anyone in the Navy ever lowered their standards by telling obnoxious jokes about our fine comrades the Marines.

FOR EXAMPLE:

A sailor in a bar leans over to the guy next to him and says, "Wanna hear a MARINE joke?"

The guy next to him replies, "Well, before you tell that joke, you should know something. I'm 6' tall, 200 lbs, and I'm a MARINE. The guy sitting next to me is 6'2'' tall, weighs 225, and he's a MARINE. The fella next to him is 6'5'' tall, weighs 250, and he's also a MARINE. Now, you still wanna tell that joke?"

The sailor says, "Nah, I don't want to have to explain it three times."

I'll hammer GENERALS instead...

Guard Duty
It was a dark, stormy, night. The Marine was on his first assignment, and it was guard duty.

A General stepped out taking his dog for a walk. The nervous young Private snapped to attention, made a perfect salute, and snapped out "Sir, Good Evening, Sir!"

The General, out for some relaxation, returned the salute and said "Good evening Marine, nice night, isn't it?"

Well it wasn't a nice night, but the Private wasn't going to disagree with the General, so the he saluted again and replied "Sir, Yes Sir!".

The General continued, "You know there's something about a stormy night that I find soothing, it's really relaxing. Don't you agree?"

The Private didn't agree, but them the private was just a private, and responded "Sir, Yes Sir!"

The General, pointing at the dog, "This is a Golden Retriever, the best type of dog to train."

The Private glanced at the dog, saluted yet again and said "Sir, Yes Sir!"

The General continued "I got this dog for my wife."

The Private simply said "Good trade Sir!"
