There is no physical filibuster, despite 'Mr. Smith Goes To Washington'. These days the filibuster is a formality not a talk-a-thon. One side indicates that it intends to extend debate indefinately, the other side can call for a vote on ending that debate. That is it. Any actual speechifying is completely voluntary.

4. Yes - they "freeze" that particular vote and move on to
other business - effectively killing it for the time being - sometimes for good.

Thanks.

I told him I thought that they'd cut off the filibuster for the SOTU, but I wasn't sure.

It would be interesting. I mean would they have to get the Capital police to haul them off the stage so Little Lord Pissypants could get his standing ovations?
