When this day is done, we will have 41 Senators who Support the Filibuster
You may not believe me right now but that is of little consequence. Your pushing and prodding has not only forged a strong Caucus within the Senate Democrats, it has given the leadership enough momentum to blast right through the Nuclear option. It's also important to note that those who do not support the filibuster are NOT traitors to the party, these 4 votes can be used to keep pressure off the candidates running in November who have a large conservative constituency. Please don't be aggravated with them for surviving and playing politics with useless votes.

We need to keep in mind what we've asked the Senators to do. We told them to filibuster and they will filibuster and that requires only 41 votes. The Republicans WILL NOT trigger the Nuclear Option, though they will start to mount an intense amount of pressure. Some are worried that the filibuster caucus will not hold when the media lifts the blackout and goes after the "obstructionists". That's going to be the interesting part. I'm sure the filibuster will hold but only if we can generate enough momentum to rocket through to the next round. That's why today is so important. Those Senators who are tottering on the fence, though they will support the filibuster, are concerned about the feasibility of maintaining the movement with theatrics. Today is the day to call and let them know that you will stick behind them when the battle is fully engaged. Call them and tell them you Support the Filibuster and will see this fight through to the end. If we can show them that we do in fact have their backs on this one, the Alito nomination will be blocked permanently and the Republicans will not be able to do anything about it.

Tomorrow will reveal the accuracy of my prediction so debating on whether or not I'm full of crap is irrelevant. If you believe we don't have enough votes, call and try to change some minds. If you think that we do have enough, call and show your support. But when this goes down, you must remember that when you ask the Democratic Party to stand up for you, they hear you and will respond. You may not agree with some of their methods but they are playing to win and that means being just a bit deceptive. I'd like to personally thank everyone whose stood up and supported this movement, as always, you guys leave me amazed. Great Job and keep it up.

2. Deception
There's been a little part of me that has thought all along that some Dems have been saying certain things publically that would indicate they are against the filibuster because that's what they WANTED the Repubs to believe. They wanted to catch the Repubs off guard and have them be overconfident and then BLAMMO!!

I hope you're right, I can almost taste victory. We don't even need 41 votes in support of filibuster though. The Repubs need 60 against. An abstention is as good as a vote against cloture and I think we may see a few abstentions that may surprise you.

7. Hope you're right,
but I suspect you're wrong.

I've been calling, writing, and e-mailing, but I think the Re pukes are going to win on this one. And if the nuclear option is triggered, well, just better hope Ginsburg, or somebody, doesn't decide to retire, or get offed by some fundie terrorist hit squad.

9. Thanks, but we'll hold the finish. And yes...
...should things come to pass as you say, I won't support any recriminations (over this vote only). For whatever that's worth.

But that said, I think the "useless voters" are making a mistake. I think they'd garner greater benefit (from an energized base and yes, even from those who disagree), if they were to stand with their comrades. Face down this non-president.

As Bill Clinton is fond of saying (paraphrase): "People will opt for 'strong and wrong' over 'weak and right' more often than not."

(Psst: And he's right, you know that? Pass it on.)

12. And we really don't need 41 to vote
We just have to keep the Republicans from getting 60 votes.

I wish the couple or three Dems who have said they might vote to close the debate would just be absent from voting at that time. Then, they wouldn't have to go back to their conservative consitituents and say they voted IN FAVOR of closing debate - they could be visiting Katrina victims (Landrieu) or miner's families (Byrd) - things that the public would appreciate, anyway. :)

16. But in that situation, the Republicans will just hold open the vote until.
everyone has had a chance to vote. In order to lock in the filibuster, we need 41 No votes on cloture. This thing has to be final, tonight.

I'm going to miss the vote , my son has a wrestling meet at 4:30...can you believe they would schedule a wrestling meet TODAY, at THAT time? *sigh* The nerve of them!;) ANYWAY, I'm probably going to miss all the GOOD stuff and hope to come home and find that you were right! I'll be thinking about this the entire time I'm gone.

19. Your math is backwards.
The requirement is for 60 senators to vote for cloture. Anything short of that, we hold the filibuster (though there could be more than one cloture vote).

So, if Senator Ensign, who was in a car crash and is hospitalized in Nevada (per a Nevada TV station's report this morning, which I would link but it froze my computer 3 times), can't attend, that is one less vote in the Republican's cloture basket.

Any Senator who abstains or is absent basically counts as pro-filibuster, because the onus is on the Rs to collect the 60 votes.
