Democrats Now MUST support filibuster to avoid partisan embarassment |
|
Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 10:16 AM by Armstead
A message that should be conveyed to wavering Democrats.
Thery may have wanted this to quietly cruise through without as fight. But they no longer have a choice.
Thanks to Kerry, Kennedy and a grass roots groundswell, there WILL be an attempted filibuster. It is inevitable, because Kerry is going to force the issue, and he has the support of a significant number of Democrats already.
So, other Democrats must now participate to avoid embarassing the Democratic Party. There are now two options. The Dems hold together and look strong and united. Or they go against their Democratic peers. That would prompt another embarassing rouncd of news stories and smirking pundits talking about the "weak and divided Democrats" and how ineffectual they are as an opposition.
Sooooo, it has reached a point where the fence is no longer an option. Every Democratic senator wither supports their party or they oppose it.

It's no matter a question of whether there will be a filibuster attempt. It is a matter of how he and the otehr Democratic senators handle it.
The matter has been taken out of their hands. They can either make the party look weak and divided or united and strong.
There is no other option at this point.

It is no longer a question of IF there is a filibuster effort, but how the democratic Party handles it.
They can use it as an opportunity to show a strong unified and principled face.
Or they can use it to perpetuate all of the stereotypes about "Democrats in disarray" and how ineffictual and "partisan" they are.

8. It needs to be delivered -- Now filibuster is the only "strategic" option |
|
The waverers can either be steamrolled by the GOP/Media or they can see this as an opportunity to show some Democratic Moxie. There is no otehr alternative at this point.

15. Exactly -- Events have pushed them to this |
|
They have to respond because they can't sweep it under the rug.
The choice is simple. Do they want the Democratic Party to look strong and unified or weal and splintered? There is no other option.
