anyone know what contitutes a quorum in the Senate? . . . |
|
is it a simple majority? . . . in other words, how many would have to walk out to prevent the Senate from conducting business? . . . important if a filibuster actually happens and they decide to try the nuclear option . . .

so 34 would have to walk out... I think that would play badly in the media, but as a last-ditch effort, who knows?

4. no, it's only 51. it would be easier than a filibuster if it was 2/3! |

Section 5 - Membership, Rules, Journals, Adjournment
Each House shall be the Judge of the Elections, Returns and Qualifications of its own Members, and a Majority of each shall constitute a Quorum to do Business; but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel the Attendance of absent Members, in such Manner, and under such Penalties as each House may provide.

Harry Reid made it quite clear that if the thugs nuke the filibuster the Opposition Party will shutdown the Senate by raising procedural motions, which must be addressed as they are raised, in perpetuity or until the filibuster rule is restored, whichever comes first.

7. So actually it is not that simple. |
|
"Often, fewer Senators are actually present on the floor, but the Senate presumes that a quorum is present unless the contrary is shown by a roll call vote or quorum call."
The Senate can do business with one senator present.
