I think Howard Dean should be TIMES person of the year
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 11:52 PM by Quixote1818
Arianna Huffington thinks Murtha should get it for his leadership in opposition to the war, but Howard Dean was against the war from it's conception and Dean had a major impact on the Dem's taking over the House and Senate.

I think Murtha is a great choice as well but Howard Dean spoke up against the war when it was very unpopular to do so.

On Edit: I think Cindy Sheehan would be a good choice as well.

1. Yes, + Dean's 50 state strategy turned both House & Senate blue!
Dean's vision and leadership have been proven true.

23. of course, most know better
As the Democrats took control of the House on Tuesday, the expected new House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, told a Democratic gathering in Washington, "Let's hear it for Rahm Emanuel. He did a great job masterminding our strategy, which is bearing fruit tonight."

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0611080085nov08,1,2440897.story?coll=chi-newsnationworld-hed

"Rahm Emanuel is a very ambitious person," Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) said yesterday, glowing in his own reelection and the possibility that he will be named chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. "There's no question that with the election, he's picked up a lot of political clout..."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/08/AR2006110802239.html

"... The architects of Democratic victory, Rep. Rahm Emanuel and Sen. Chuck Schumer..."

Michael Scherer, http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/11/08/pelosi/index.html

Credit in particular goes to Rahm Emanuel and Chuck Schumer, who led the House and Senate efforts to pick candidates...

But you have to give Rahm Emanuel, the House Democratic campaign chief, credit for recruiting an impressive group of candidates, including a few non-liberals like Brad Ellsworth in Indiana and Heath Shuler in North Carolina. (From the Conservative Weekly Standard)

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/11/08/opinion/main2162362.shtml

Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, and Rahm Emanuel say they are happy to share credit for the Democrats' electoral success, but not everyone in the party is feeling as generous. Progressive bloggers, who often promote and criticize the Democratic Party with equal vigor, want their props. (From the liberal The Nation)

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/11/08/opinion/main2162618.shtml

"...Congressman Rahm Emanuel, whose staff will get most of the credit for a big victory."

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.), the architect of the Democratic takeover of the House, will take the No. 4 spot in the leadership, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/printedition/2006/11/13/natleaders1113a.html

Rahm Emanuel, the mastermind behind the Democratic victory and the party's disciplinarian...

And Democratic gains included the addition of many conservative Democrats, brilliantly recruited by Rep. Rahm Emanuel with classic Clintonian triangulation.

Who needs conservative Democrats? The day our party quits protecting a woman's right to choose is the day I leave and vote green instead.

4. I actually agree. It's not pie in the sky wishful thinking...
Dean HAS had a major impact on the world and is suddenly an international player, called in by Liberals in Canada and Labour in the UK for advice and speechifying on how they, too, can revitalize their parties. And who else has had an impact? It's been a quiet year for notables because the big worldwide action is the constant drain in Iraq and Afghanistan. That's a decentralized guerilla war.

No doubt about it. Howard did good, but she's the one who has orchestrated the attack on Bush, Murtha, Rahm, the whole deal. That filtered over for the Senate. She's 'the man' this year.

24. Howard Dean is the sign of our times
No one else, in our country's history, has thought to create the 50 state strategy and worked so hard to bring it to fruition.

I agree! Dean should be TIMES person of the year.

25. I supported Dean since TIME first put his face on their cover in August 2003
when he was running for president. Before that I had never heard of him.

Yeah, I'd support him as person of the year even if I wasn't a rabid Deaniac.

And then goes on to say how centrist and bi-partisan they need to be.

29. Just so long as they don't name Rahm Emanuel or (worse) DeLay, Abramoff, & Foley
I can really see a "Crooks of the Year" cover page--a painting of the three against a black background, their torsoes disappearing into the shadow, maybe a hint of jail bars behind them. Of course they could always throw it to Mamoud Abbas or whathisface al-Maliki. They certainly have been shaping events more than Bush has.
