Time: Bush chipped in $12 million into midterms, would have gone to prez library

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1558297,00.html

<snip>

Rove chalks up the loss to corruption, incumbent overconfidence and conservative dissatisfaction with spending. He does not read the outcome as exclusively a judgment on either Iraq or Bush. "Iraq mattered," Rove says. "But it was more frustration than it was an explicit call for withdrawal." Which is not to say the White House didn't see trouble coming. To keep the Republican National Committee from having to take out a loan, according to Republican officials, Bush chipped in $12 million of his campaign funds that otherwise would have gone to his presidential library. Looking ahead, friends say Rove has already identified four voter groups to watch in 2008: Catholics, Hispanics, suburban moderates and people with less than a college education. All four groups swung away from Republicans in this election.

4. Gotta love how the losers get to define their loss, and the winners somehow
are not able to define their loss.

Republicans said if the Democrats didn't win, they were basically done as a party. When it became clear that the Democrats would win, Republicans said that if Democrats didn't win by a substantial margin, it would essentially be a loss for Democrats. Now, we are supposed to believe that it wasn't really a win for Democrats, it was "frustration."

Also, gotta love all the preelection stories about how much money Republicans had and how little Democrats had -- and now we learn Bush had to loan the RNC $12 MM.

liberal media indeed.

16. It's an oxymoron, isn't it?
The words "George W. Bush" and "Presidential Library" do not go together. :)

6. could we please just kick them when they're down
Edited on Mon Nov-13-06 07:58 AM by NJCher
If the robocalls are found to be illegal, I understand they can be fined $500 per call. With thousands upon thousands of these calls made, it would seem a way of bankrupting the republican party. It needs to be done.

This loan on bush's part shows how little support they have. I'm not advocating a one-party system but this would be a way that a new right could arise, and with a little luck, sans the Newt Gingrich and neocon types.

7. That money was cursed no matter how it was used, I guess
Bush might actually haved saved his presidency and his party if he had donated it to Katrina relief last year instead.

10. "My Pet Goat"
Now in it's 400,000th Printing...

Other than the Reagan coloring books, and the SKIDS upon SKIDS of papers Proving Bush SENIOR is one of the Biggest crooks of the century in the Bush Library Vault, there's really no reason for this Library at all..

I'm willing to bet that at some point in his life, Bush will call it a "Libary" :)

28. Three things ...
1) The lost ground with "people with less than a college education" ... THAT would be their "base" ...

2) That aside, do these guys REALLY believe their own nonsense ... This whole "conservative dissatisfaction with spending" thing as an excuse implies that it was a loss from their "base" that caused the loss ... Their base is pretty much a bunch of mindless zombies who will vote democratic regardless ... This was was NOT about their voters not showing up or voting the other way ...

3) The difference is the middle of the road voter ... Bottom line, and the difference in the votes the last four times have been this ...
2000 - the average american was doing pretty darn good from the 90s, was apathetic in really paying attention, but also was tired as heck of the screaming from the right ... They bought the Gore was a geek/Bush was a guy you would have a beer with meme, cause they just were asleep, and voted for Bush to shut up the Rushes of the world ...
2002 - the average american had buyers remorse from day one with Bush, but then 9-11 happened, the country was far too freaked out to even want to discern the "we are all going to die unless the reps are in charge meme ...
2004 - people were just on the fringe of not buying the we are all going to die if the reps are not in charge meme, but Iraq, to them, still had the slightest chance of turning out, so they gave the repukes one more go around ...
2006 - Katrina totally burst the bubble, the non brain dead now know Iraq is a disaster, the total lack of governance by congress is in full sight, and people are starting to get sick to death of hearing about how we all are going to die ...

Bottom line ... These clowns win by "shoring up the base" and marginalizing the middle enough to sqeek out elections ... They used 9-11 to squeeze the middle through two election cycles, but that tune is PLAYED OUT ...

As long as the democrats start hammering with positive frames, they can keep the tide going in the RIGHT direction ...
