US Christian Organisations to Reach Out to Newly Elected Democrats
Christian organisations in the US are keen to reach out to newly elected Democrats following their resounding victory in last Tuesday's mid-term elections.

The Christian Defense Coalition, the National Pro-life Action Center and Faith and Action are just three of numerous Christian ministries and institutions in the US that are hoping to reach out to the newly elected Democratic members of Congress following their sweeping victory in last week’s mid-term elections.

The Democrats made significant inroads into the ‘God vote’ in last Tuesday’s poll, picking up 29 per cent of the vote among white evangelicals and, significantly, winning back the Roman Catholic vote. Much of the Republican Party’s Christian base did, contrary to expectations, stick by President Bush on the day.

The faith and value groups are keen to stress that members of their organisations are committed to principles and values rather than allegiance to a particular political party or partisan politics and will embrace democrats who share these values.

Rev Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, said: “As Christians we are not beholden to any one political party or group. Rather, we have been called to stand for principles that make America stronger, safer and healthier.

1. Oh God NO!
We didn't expend our blood sweat and tears the past six years just to have these snakes find an opening and try to change the party like they did to the Republicans. Unlike many of you here on DU, I don't forgive, I don't forget and I don't fall for their line. They see two years to try to position themselves to take over in 08.

3. I disagree
Although I am an atheist and of course do not want to cross the church and state line, I do think the Dems need to reach out and embrace this group. Why? Politically. You meet with these groups and basically set the tone. Maybe we won't be voting on gays and abortions anytime soon, but we do have common interest in our troops not dying, the economy especially in the helping of the poor, and the environment.

The more Christians who get turned onto Dems now the better we fare for 2008.

This is a genuine opportunity to persuade these groups on "safe, legal, and rare."

8. These right-wing groups do not represent the majority of people of faith
Edited on Mon Nov-13-06 10:24 AM by pberq
Folks, let's take a look at reality - the right wing Christians are the minority of people of faith in this country. It's just that they are more vocal and more organized.

The views of the majority of people of faith are represented by people like Jim Wallis. See Sojourners:

Another one is Sister Helen Prejean, and her fight against the death penalty:

14. I Think The Plan Is the Other Way Around
These groups seek to subvert the Democratic Party. (And not by praying over us, either).

4. They're welcome to join the party
as long as they don't expect the party to pander to their religion. We cannot allow our government to be controlled by those who delude themselves into believing that some deity has ordained them to reign.
