Levin wants phased withdrawal from Iraq

WASHINGTON - The incoming chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee said today he wants to see a gradual pullout of U.S. troops from Iraq beginning in four to six months.

Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan said that would pressure Iraqi leaders to end the violence in their country.

"They and only they can decide whether they want a nation or whether they want a civil war," Levin said.

He told reporters he will work to get approval from Republicans and Democrats for a nonbinding resolution calling for the phased troop withdrawal.

Levin said he is not prepared at this point to try other measures to pressure the White House to change its course in Iraq. One other possible option is for Congress to withhold funding for the war.

1. I Don't Think Phased Withdrawals Work

Unless you're in control of the territory - which we're not. This will quickly turn into a galloping clusterfuck.

Unfortunately, we need to either add al LOT of troops or get the hell out.
