A statement released Monday by the Iraqi government said Abizaid -- who commands U.S. forces in the region -- and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki spoke about the "effect of neighbouring countries on the security situation in Iraq."
Meanwhile, U.S. President George Bush has said he is looking forward to a report by a bipartisan panel on Iraq that is expected to suggest the same strategy.
The panel, called the Iraq Study Group and consisting of an equal number of Democrats and Republicans, will likely release its findings before the end of the year.
