Toys for Tots rejects Jesus doll
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061114/ap_on_re_us/jesus_doll_rejected

LOS ANGELES - A talking Jesus doll has been turned down by the Marine Reserves' Toys for Tots program.

A suburban Los Angeles company offered to donate 4,000 of the foot-tall dolls, which quote Bible verses, for distribution to needy children this holiday season. The battery-powered Jesus is one of several dolls manufactured by one2believe, a division of the Valencia-based Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co., based on Biblical figures.

But the charity balked because of the dolls' religious nature.

<snip>

According to the company's Web site, the button-activated, bearded Jesus, dressed in hand-sewn cloth outfits and sandals, recites Scripture such as "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again" and "Love your neighbor as yourself." It has a $20 retail value.

Grein also questioned whether children would welcome a gift designed for religious instruction. "Kids want a gift for the holiday season that is fun," he said.

<snip>

The "war on Christmas" has already begun. :eyes: I imagine BO will have a freaking fit when he sees this. I just might tune in tonight just to see his head spin around in circles and the veins bulge explosively in his neck. :rofl:

1. As Dylan said -
Disillusionned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everythin' from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without lookin' too far
That not much
Is really sacred.

4. Only $20 as well!
Jesus is cheap this year. That's exactly how they do it though. They get you hooked on the cheap stuff when you're a kid and the next thing you know you're a grown person supporting a $50 a day Jesus habit. Oh....those Jesus pushers are the scum of the earth. :evilgrin:

9. Made in China, no doubt,
by forced child labor or political prisoners.

That's how Jeebus would have done it, I'm sure !
Little known fact, He was a ruthless, anti union capitalist.

"Suffer the little children unto me, so that I make them worketh in the sweatshop "

12. I'm afraid that you are probably right...
But what the hell, the Jesus of the republican party loves only rich, white people anyway.

5. And Jesus needs batteries (not included)
So.......these poor kids would be getting a doll that couldn't say anything anyway. Without batteries Jesus is just a dirty hippie doll. :shrug:

6. And the same people who are appalled at the rejection
would be up in arms if they had accepted a talking Muhammad doll reciting Koranic scripture.

7. I kind of like the doll, but only parts
I like a Jesus doll that says "love your neighbor". It's the part about "you must be born again" that bothers me. Fundamentalists have turned that into a message that says you have to be a Christian or else you are going to burn in hell. I don't agree with that at all. I think that Jesus makes it clear in John chapter 10 that there are are other sheep that aren't a part of the flock, but that eventually they will be a part, and there will be one flock (bad paraphrase). Jesus promised that everyone would be okay.

All right, I am a unitarian and I am biased. But a doll that promotes love is cool. A doll that promotes an exclusive message that says other religions suck is bad.

ps. How about a doll of Gandhi that says things like "non-violence is the way", or "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth makes the world blind and toothless."

8. Hmmm. Such a doll seems sacriligious and blasphemous to me...
but then, I'm an evangelical fundamentalist.
