Bingaman's Staffer Just Made a Deal with Me
by Maryscott OConnor
Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 02:16:53 PM PDT

Crossposted from My Left Wing

I just got an extraordinary challenge from a staffer in Jeff Bingaman's office:

2000 calls against cloture to his office in the next 20 minutes and Bingaman will be goddamned impressed enough to reconsider his Yes vote on Cloture.

It didn't occur to me to leave him my name, but I did tell him I'd be making an appeal on the Internet.

Here's the toll-free number (though they'll probably tell you the line is busy): 888 355 3588

Here's the direct number to Jeff Bingaman's office: 202 224 5521

Don't bother arguing, just tell them:

"I'm one of the 2000 people from the Internet one of your recent callers promised you'd hear from in the next 20 minutes, and I'm demanding/requesting/asking that Senator Bingaman vote NO on cloture."

Let's see if this means ANYTHING. Make the call.

202 224 5521

7. All Circuits Are Busy Now!! We've shut down the switchboard...
2000 calls in 20-minutes is, however, a sucker bet - it isn't possible for his staff to handle that many that quickly. In fact, I think it is rude.

25. Both lines busy!
I was going to say: I'm a 40 year member of the Democratic Party, and I'm sitting here just weeping over Democrats who won't support other Democratis in an effort to DO SOMETHING about this Bush junta. And Senator Bingaman is from a DEMOCRATIC state! Not supporting this filibuster makes Senator Bingaman a scab--crossing a picket line! Tell him we don't want scabs in the Democratic Party! We want courageous men and women who support EACH OTHER and the great progressive American MAJORITY which is 60/40 anti-Bush on all issues and in all approval polls.

34. I'm sorry, but that's BS
Are they just jacking us around now? Where has Bingaman been? Has he not heard what we've been doing for all these days?

Sorry, the Senator's not impressed now, but if you can do THIS trick, maybe he will be?

I'm unimpressed with the Senator.

And if the staffer made the offer without backing from the Senator, then he/she should be fired.

This is not some game.

36. called the Roswell office - staffer says Bingaman will NOT support
the filibuster because "it's going to fail anyway, so what's the use?" - I commented that "the use" is the principled position to protect the gold standard of the constitution on checks and balances - also, that I believe the Senator is familiar with his voting option to abstain -- therefore, the Senator should also count on the fact that those of us in NM will remember this cloture vote of his when he runs again for the Senate in November 2006.

Need Help?

Just keep hitting redial. (none / 0)

I should add, the guy I talked to in the DC office was very polite and almost amused, especially at the "this is one of the 2000 calls you're going to get" part of the message.

I think it's less about not wanting to vote against cloture, and more about wanting to be sure the support's out there. Keep it up...

Too little too late, I imagine, but at least he heard from me. I'm one of his constituents, from La Luz. Dobson has targeted Bingaman as one of the top 6 Dems to 'get rid of' and I admire the Senator's quiet, get-things-done abilities. I don't expect to like everything he does or understand why, but he has earned my trust.
