Chris Shays is now New England's only Republican congresscritter.
Since Joe Courtney is the winner of Connecticut's 2nd congressional district by a mere 90-something votes, Chris Shays, of Connecticut's 4th district, is the only Republican representative left.

This winter must feel like a cold, lonely one, Chris...

5. What were the ugly remarks Shays made a few weeks before election?

They were truly ugly.

Unlike Ted. What an ass. I hope he pays 100 times over for his remarks.

7. Mike Castle if you count Delaware as New England
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 01:36 AM by Hippo_Tron
Although Delaware is below New York so I can see why it wouldn't be counted.

8. New York isn't New England.
New England is only: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Shays almost lost. I would have loved that.

10. That's interesting
In many ways this election solidified the Dems in the Northeast the way the '94 elections pushed the Repugs to the majority in the south. In terms of voting record, Shays was probably the most moderate, so maybe it was the best he survived if any had to, but he made a couple comments during this election season that lowered what I thought of him quite a bit. Seeing him on shows like Crossfire in the past, I can remember thinking, "Hey, if all Repubs were like Shays, the party would be tolerable." I don't feel quite that way anymore. It's cool seeing so much "blue" up in the northeast on the Congressional district map.

11. He was on C-Span's Washington Journal
The other morning and he was truly sickening. Parroting the MSM media saying
moderates won, the Dems used to be corrupt as the Republicans when they were in
power, we must win in Iraq, bla, bla, bla. He seemed very arrogant and I sincerely
hope this guy is out in two years.

12. A Man Without A Party...
He's the minority of the minority now. Instead of being a "power broker", Shays is now a broken-down politician. He waged a nasty campaign and totally shreded his integrity to win, win, win. Now what does he have to show for it? A divided district that he'll have to try to win even harder the next time with less support and surely a stronger Democratic party.

I'll be watching Mr. Shays and see where he fits into the brave new world known as the 110th Congress.

13. do RW radio hosts say NE 'not real America' like they say about SF???
It would seem hard to say Plymouth etc is 'not real America,' but I'm sure they'll manage.

15. us New Englanders will be happy to talk about 'real America'

with these blowhards. We'll bring along a copy of the Confederate Constitution along with the real thing; we have some questions.

That being said, New Englanders tend not worry too much about our national reputation. We're not all too convinced of the sanity of people east of the Hudson River, but the regional view is that there's a steep dropoff once you get west of it. The past few years have born out this view rather well....

14. if he'd had a slightly better challenger....

Farrell wasn't bad as challengers go, but she wasn't the really compelling kind. She also sold out Lamont and stuck with Lieberman, that really pissed off a lot activists in Connecticut.

Personally, I'm happy the region's worst congenital liars- Nancy Johnson and Sue Kelly (NY)- and party line hack- Jeb Bradley- bit the dust hard.

The one that gets me is Peter King surviving on Long Island. I can live with Shays, but King is the kind of Republican straight out of 'From Here to Eternity' who simply deserves to be shot at dawn.
